Community Announcement from the Chairman of the Board, Skamania County Fire District #4 (SCFD #4)

Skamania County Fire District #4 is proud to announce that we have received a grant award of $911,800 from the Washington State Department of Commerce for the construction of a new Living Quarters Building.

This important project would not have been possible without the dedication and partnership of several key leaders and agencies working on behalf of our community.

Special thanks to:
* 17th District State Representative Kevin Waters
* Skamania County EMS and Rescue Superintendent Ann Lueders
* Skamania County Sheriff Summer Scheyer
* Skamania County Fire District #2 Chief Ray Broughton
* Skamania County Fire District #4 Chief Chief Fuller

Construction has begun, with completion scheduled for September 11, 2026. Once completed, the Living Quarters will round out the Western Skamania County Public Service Complex, strengthening our emergency services infrastructure. Housing emergency personnel on-site will significantly improve response times, operational readiness, and professional development opportunities, ultimately enhancing public safety across the region.

We are grateful for the continued support that makes projects like this possible and for the shared commitment to protecting and serving our community.

All of us at Skamania County Fire Dist 4 extend our sincere condolences to The Frenz Family and all members of Vancouver Fire Dept on their loss of Firefighter/Paramedic...Jerimiah Frenz. RIP Brother!

The Vancouver Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the off-duty passing of Firefighter Paramedic Jeremiah Frenz, who tragically passed away on January 13, 2026.

Firefighter Frenz was assigned to Fire Station 5, B Shift, where he proudly served the Vancouver community on Truck 5. He began his career with the Vancouver Fire Department on March 16, 2020, following prior service in Oregon as both a firefighter and a paramedic.

Jeremiah was a dedicated public servant and a revered member of the Vancouver Fire Department family. His professionalism, commitment to service, and camaraderie made a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working alongside him. His loss is deeply felt across the department and the community he served.

“This is an extremely difficult time for our department,” said Vancouver Fire Chief John Drake. “Jeremiah was a revered member of our VFD team who left us far too soon.”
The Vancouver Fire Department extends its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Jeremiah’s family, friends, and loved ones. Department members are encouraged to support one another during this period of mourning and to seek support as needed.

Details regarding memorial services or additional arrangements will be shared when available. The department respectfully asks that the family’s privacy be honored during this difficult time.

SKAMANIA COUNTY DAMAGE ASSESSMENT OPERATIONS KICK-OFF AFTER WEATHER PROVIDES REPRIEVE – please continue to send us damage data

12/19/2025 – After a 30-hour barrage of heavy rain and strong winds, Skamania County finally saw a reprieve in the weather, but the work has just begun.

Public works departments for the county and both cities are still attempting to repair significant damage to public roads, bridges, water utilities and other public services spread throughout the county. Due to the wide-spread damage, and the level of these damages, repairs will be a long process and must be triaged in order of highest impact first.

The Skamania County Emergency Operations Center orchestrated damage assessment actions this week, utilizing volunteers both within the E.O.C. and out in the field. E.O.C. volunteers worked diligently in identifying and mapping damaged areas, consolidating this data to assist in threat assessment and cost recovery.
Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue volunteers deployed throughout the County to evaluate known damage areas and identify unreported damage. SAR personnel deployed their drone, capturing aerial video and shot photos of significant areas for documentation.

All of this is being packaged in a comprehensive package to submit for state and federal relief programs, in hopes that outside funding or support programs will help residents, businesses and agencies recover in the future.

Although the weather forecast shows significant improvement, flood watches are still in effect until 12/20/2025 at 4:00 PM.
Additionally, recreational opportunities, including hiking and water sports, within Skamania County are extremely treacherous due to this weather event. The risk of landslides and flooding still exist. Hiking trails have experienced significant tree fall, creating additional hazards for recreationalists. If recreationalists choose to venture out, be mindful that search and rescue volunteers have been taxed for this event and could be limited in their response if assistance is needed.

Residents, agencies and businesses are encouraged to reach out if you have property affected by the storm. Send us “before” and “after” photos and descriptors of damage incurred. Please provide this information to Emergency Manager Barb Ayers at [email protected] or 509-427-3898 by 12/28/25.
