All around the world, communities are plagued by the contamination of heavy metals. Toxic leftovers from mining, manufacturing and application of metal laden fertilizers and pesticides, these metals do not degrade, but remain intact forever.

Often altered to more toxic forms during industrial processes, heavy metals take to the wind, settle into the soil, and leach into our waterways. Heavy metals can contaminate ecosystems across long distances. Posing the most risk to human health are arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium.

Plastic is everywhere. How much plastic are you using in your daily life? We understand that it can be difficult to avoid plastic products. But it can be done! If we all made small swaps in our plastic use, the global impact can be phenomenal!

Here are 3 plastic swaps to make in your life:
1. Water Bottles - In the United States, we are using an estimated 70 million bottles of plastic water bottles each day! Using a reusable water bottle is a great way to help reduce plastic waste.

2. Coffee Cups - Each year, we are using 16 billion disposable coffee cups in the U.S. Talk about a lot of Joe! You may think that takeaway coffee cups are recyclable. Unfortunately, however, most are not. A plastic coating laminates the inside, and they use plastic lids. Make the switch to a reuseable coffee cup and continue to enjoy your morning coffee in a sustainable way.

3. Plastic Bags - The average American family takes home about 1,500 plastic bags each year. Plastic bags are easy to swap for more sustainble carrier bags, such as a linen carrier bag. Next time you're heading to the grocery store, remember to pack your reusable shopping bag and Say NO To Plastic!

What plastic swaps have you made at home? Share in the comments below!
