At 1:46 AM on Monday, 25 May, DVFR was dispatched from Station 131 to a reported structure fire in the Gunlock area.

Engine 131 and Battalion Chief 132 responded along with Santa Clara - Ivins Fire & Rescue and Northwestern Fire. Upon arrival, crews encountered a significant attic fire with partial roof collapse. Crews engaged in fire suppression efforts to contain the fire to the attic and first floor.

During suppression operations, electrical power lines connected to the structure fell to the ground, creating an immediate hazard. This limited fireground operations on one side of the structure until the power company could arrive on scene and de-energize the power lines.

After the main body of fire was knocked down, the structure was evaluated for stability. Crews determined that interior operations could safely continue in portions of the residence; however, the kitchen and living room areas sustained extensive fire and structural damage and remained unsafe for entry.

Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul operations to extinguish remaining hot spots. Suppression and overhaul efforts were prolonged due to the heavy volume of insulation present in the attic space. Crews were unable to secure water service to the residence because the main water shutoff valve could not be located.

During incident operations, one firefighter experienced a medical emergency and was transported from the scene for evaluation.

Although the official fire cause is still under investigation, it is suspected that the fire was started from an unattended fire barrel.

As a reminder anytime you have a fire ensure that you maintain a safe distance from your residence and that your fire is cold and out before you walk away from it.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifice made by those who never returned home, and to recognize the families who carry that sacrifice every day.

Their courage, service, and commitment to something greater than themselves will never be forgotten.

From all of us at Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue, we extend our deepest gratitude to our fallen heroes and their loved ones. We also thank all who have served our country and who continue to serve our communities.

Please take a moment today to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.

At 1:50PM Saturday, DVFR was dispatched to a reported brush fire on the east side of Dammeron Valley. Engine 131 and Brush 1361 responded and crews commenced an initial attach within minutes. The fire was knocked down with no damage to structures and no injuries. DVFR crews will remain on site to monitor and address any flare ups from the fire that burned less than one acre. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Thank you to Santa Clara - Ivins Fire & Rescue, Diamond Valley Fire, and Washington County Sheriff's Office - Utah for their assistance and response.

Residents are reminded that Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in place for Washington County and surrounding public lands. These restrictions prohibit:

🔥Campfires and open fires outside of approved campgrounds and homesites with running water.
🎆Fireworks and pyrotechnics outside o f city limits and on public lands, with fireworks always prohibited on federal lands.
💥Shooting of exploding targets or tracer ammunition.
⚙️Metalworking (cutting, grinding, welding) in dry vegetation areas.
🏍️Equipment use without a working spark arrestor.
🚭Smoking near vegetation or outside o f developed recreation sites, personal vehicles, or buildings.

The State of Utah is currently under a State of Emergency due to drought from limited rain and snow pack. Continued dry conditions, wind, and availability of fuels pose significant risk to Dammeron Valley and all of the SR-18 corridor communities, so it is critical to be vigilant and comply with all restrictions.

If you see what you think is smoke, call 911 to report it. DVFR would rather investigate mistaken smoke than allow a fire to get a foothold and put our community at risk.

Crews will be testing hydrants today in Pinion Hills. Please note the recommendations below if you notice any cloudiness in your water.

DVFR will be conducing annual hydrant testing over the next several days. Today's tests will be run on the East side of Dammeron Valley. Please stay clear of crews conducting the testing and drive slowly around the apparatus.

Hydrant testing is an important safety measure to ensure correct operation and adequate flow. These tests are also reviewed as part of Dammeron Valley's ISO inspection and are a contributor to the overall ISO rating for the Valley.

Residents may notice some sediment after the hydrants are tested. Dammeron Valley Water Works recommends running a garden hose until your water runs clear if you notice any discoloration or sediment.

‼️Important Update‼️

The State of Utah has requested DVFR close the current chipping drop-off location due to its proximity to a flood control berm. Effective immediately, please DO NOT attempt to drop off any yard materials for chipping at the Community Garden location.

DVFR is working to identify a new drop-off location for ongoing chipping and fuels mitigation, and we will provide an update when the new location is available.

✅The chipping pile at the Dammeron Valley Community Garden is open again.

Last week, a DVFR crew chipped an estimated 43,000 cubic feet of brush and limbs that was cleared from properties by residents working to mitigate wildfire risk. This effort was funded under DVFR's Community Wildfire Defense Grant provided by the US Department of Agriculture's Forest Service.

As a result of the clearing, the area is now open to receive additional chippable yard waste. We ask that anyone dropping off follow our guidelines, as we encountered a lot of difficulty with items not stacked properly or that were unacceptable for chipping.

🆗Small branches or limbs no more than 6 inches in diameter
🆗Sage and other brush that does not include root balls/dirt
🆗Other small diameter brush items
🆖Shrubs or items containing dirt or root balls
🆖Branches or limbs more than 6 inches in diameter
🆖Stumps - Come on folks!
🆖Construction wood or other building materials
🆖Anything containing dirt or rocks

Please stack your items in orderly piles with the cut ends facing out. This makes it easier on our crew to feed the items into the chipper. And, we need common sense to prevail...we can't put stumps or bushes with root balls (versus clean cut ends) into the chipper.

Now that we have some amazing cooler weather, it's a great time to start your yard cleanups and get your items to the chipping pile.

Don't forget to report the hours you spend on property cleanup and wildfire mitigation using the form on our website: https://www.dvfirerescue.org/wildfire
