Interest and investment in geothermal energy are growing, despite early challenges due to high upfront costs and longer earnings cycles. Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) costs are declining based on technological advances and drilling improvements, demonstrating that continued work in the field could further drive down costs and accelerate the integration of geothermal electricity into the grid. 💡

The U.S. Department of Energy is committed to derisking new geothermal technologies through robust RD&D. This includes improving resource exploration with tools like machine learning, advancing materials and methods for drilling in harsh environments, and proving out new techniques in field demonstration projects. 👷

Officially launched at the National Lab of the Rockies (NLR) campus in Golden, CO, and enabled by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the CoE will:

A prize to find hidden geothermal resources? Rock on.🔍

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Geothermal has launched a prize to help identify hidden geothermal systems by using geophysical data to identify faults and structures indicative of geothermal resources.

By using real-world datasets and testing ideas against geophysical data, the GEMS Prize is expected to accelerate discoveries of new, commercially viable hidden geothermal systems while reducing exploration and development risks.♨️🌎

Competitors can win prizes of $15,000‒$100,000 for developing, training, and testing algorithms that generate enhanced geologic fault datasets.

U.S. LNG export capacity is coming online, and exports are climbing with it. 📈

New U.S. Energy Information Administration data shows U.S. liquefied natural gas exports averaged 17.4 billion cubic feet per day in the first half of 2026, 23% higher than the same period last year and the fastest growth since large-scale American exports began in 2016.

New terminals and expansions are driving it — Plaquemines LNG is exporting at full capacity, Corpus Christi Stage 3 is exporting from six of its liquefaction trains, and Golden Pass LNG began exports in April 2026. EIA estimates U.S. LNG exports will average 18.7 Bcf/d in the first half of 2027.

Under President Trump's American Energy Dominance Agenda, U.S. LNG exports are growing and flowing to our allies and trading partners around the world.

Last week in Seoul, HGEO Acting Assistant Secretary Curt Coccodrilli and Korea’s Second Vice Climate Minister Lee Ho-hyeon discussed how both nations can strengthen bilateral energy security cooperation. Their discussion covered expanding the power grid to meet growing demand, increasing energy storage, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening energy supply chains.

South Korea already imports American coal and LNG, providing a strong commercial foundation for additional deals, investment, and long-term partnerships.

Under President Trump’s American Energy Dominance Agenda, HGEO is working with our allies to strengthen energy security at home and abroad.

"Securing stable energy supply chains and power supplies is the backbone of a country's industrial competitiveness."

Lee Ho-hyeon, Second Vice Minister at South Korea's Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, made that statement in connection with his meeting in Seoul with HGEO Acting Assistant Secretary Curt Coccodrilli. The two discussed how both countries can respond jointly to growing market uncertainty and rising electricity demand. 🤝

South Korea's world-class manufacturing, steelmaking, shipbuilding, and technology sectors all depend on abundant and reliable energy, and the United States is positioned to deliver it.
