Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation The GWOT Memorial Foundation leads the efforts to build the National Global War on Terrorism Memorial

The Global War on Terrorism Memorial will be a lasting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of all who have served, and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, in the nation’s longest war to protect our country, while inspiring all Americans to stand united behind those who continue to serve.

On June 14, 1777, the United States of America established the American Flag, creating a symbol that would come to represent the values and unity of our Nation. 🇺🇸

Today, the Stars and Stripes still fly alongside every American in uniform, including the brave men and women serving in the Global War on Terrorism. It stands as a beacon of hope and a commitment to freedom.

Krista Simpson Anderson lost her husband, SSG Michael Harrison Simpson, five days after an IED attack in Eastern Afghanistan in 2013. He was a Green Beret, a father, and a man whose final act saved three lives.

For over a decade, Gold Star families like Krista's have had no permanent place on the National Mall to gather. No tribute for those who answered the call after the tragic events of 9/11. No sacred ground where families could come to remember, heal, and unite.

This Memorial changes that — built by and for the people who lived this history. Michael's story will be part of it, and so will the stories of every family that has carried this weight.

From day one, our mission has been to listen to the warrior culture that emerged from this conflict, give voice to those who lived it, and ensure their experiences helped shape what this Memorial would become.

Beginning in 2018, we gathered input from the American people, culminating in more than 20,000 Americans across all 50 states and territories, veterans from every branch of service, Gold Star families, and veterans from every conflict since WWII. That feedback didn't just inform our process; it is embedded in every element of this design. Our 23-member Design Advisory Council, comprised of Gold Star parents, spouses, and children; combat veterans; active-duty service members and military families, worked alongside the design team to ensure that their lived experience and feedback guided every decision.

Our listening continues, which is why the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation launched a survey immediately after releasing the initial design concept to encourage continued, constructive dialogue. The same spirit of listening that began in 2018 and shaped this Memorial will carry us forward. We welcome the conversation as we continue this sacred no-fail mission to honor all those who served, sacrificed, and carried the burden of this war.

In the days and weeks ahead, we’ll be sharing more about the initial design concept and meaning behind the Global War on Terrorism Memorial.

One of the most important questions is how we will honor the fallen. This Memorial is for every veteran, uniformed and non-uniformed, who gave their lives, including those whose stories are publicly known, those whose service remains classified, as well as those lost to su***de and service-connected illness.

Watch to see how we will ensure that every sacrifice is remembered and no one is left behind.

Join us as we build a place to welcome our warriors home.

Since 2015, a small group of veterans, military families, and devoted citizens has worked together on a simple but powerful mission to ensure that every individual who served in the Global War on Terrorism is honored with a permanent Memorial on the National Mall.

Today, we took the next step by unveiling the initial design concept to the world. Thank you to our Honorary Chair, President George W. Bush, for helping us mark this milestone.

It is an honor to announce that Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation Honorary Chair, President George W. Bush, will join us via pre-recorded message on Wednesday, June 10 as we publicly unveil the initial design concept for the Global War on Terrorism Memorial.

As Commander in Chief in the aftermath of September 11, President Bush led our Nation through the opening chapter of the Global War on Terrorism. His presence at this historic moment reflects the significance of what this Memorial represents: a national place of honor, remembrance, healing, and unity for all who served, sacrificed, and carried the weight of more than two decades of war.

For years, the Global War on Terrorism community has waited for a permanent place on the National Mall. A place that says: we see you, we honor you, and we will never forget.

On Wednesday, we take a major step toward making that place a reality.

Join us for this free public event and witness history with us.

Register now at gwotmf.org/rsvp — and please share this with someone in your network who needs to see it.
