Today at the OAS, the OAS Permanent Council delivered a resounding, near-unanimous vote condemning the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship's assault on hemispheric peace and stability, with support from 29 members. The message is clear — our region stands united. The Trump Administration stands firmly with the Nicaraguan people in their fight for freedom from tyranny

This strong, near-unanimous result sends a clear message: our hemisphere stands united against the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship’s ongoing assault on the rights of Nicaraguans, rule of law and representative democracy, and our hemisphere’s security.

The United States is proud to have worked alongside Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay to advance this resolution, and we remain committed to supporting the Nicaraguan people's demands for a future free from tyranny and brutal oppression.

To the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship and to those who tried to stand in the way of this important resolution’s adoption: the hemisphere is watching, it will not look away, and it will transform words into actions against those who threaten our shared peace and stability.

This year, as the museum turns 50 and the U.S. turns 250, we're bringing those anniversaries together with a special exhibition, now open. Wednesday’s, Permanent Council session was the start of a formal OAS process on Nicaragua and we were joined by many members who agree that the time for collective action is now. The United States, joined by co-sponsors Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru, welcomed the robust and productive participation from OAS delegations. Next steps: close coordination with allies, leading to a vote at the Permanent Council.

Our position remains clear: it's time to move beyond statements and take real action to address the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship's efforts that undermine the peace and security of the hemisphere.

The spillover effects of the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship—threaten the peace and security of our entire hemisphere. The United States has taken decisive action through sanctions, visa restrictions, and diplomatic tools, but we cannot continue to act alone. We call on OAS member states to convene a foreign ministers meeting to discuss next steps toward collective action against the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship’s assault on the peace of the Americas. Our message to the Nicaraguan people is clear: we stand with you.

As Murillo and Ortega move to rewrite Nicaragua's constitution for the second time in two years, extending their authoritarian grip on power,the United States is calling for a serious, collective action-based response from the Organization of American States. The people of Nicaragua have suffered enough. It's time for our hemisphere to stand united in defense of the Nicaraguan people's rights.

As the United States proudly marks its 250th Anniversary and the Art Museum of the Americas marks its 50th anniversary, we look forward to the upcoming Passport to Patriotism exhibit opening on July 30th at the AMA in Washington, D.C.!

Presented in partnership with the U.S. Department of State's Office of Art in Embassies, Passport to Patriotism brings together works of art that tell the story of two and a half centuries of American diplomacy, culture, and creativity.
