⛵🇺🇸🇷🇴 America250: Romania’s Mircea Brings History, Friendship, and Maritime Tradition to America
For four memorable days in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Romanian training ship Mircea was more than a visiting vessel — it was a floating ambassador of Romania.
Fifty years after participating in America’s Bicentennial celebrations, Mircea returned to the United States as part of the America250 commemorations, welcoming aboard diplomats, community leaders, business representatives, veterans, Romanian-Americans, and hundreds of visitors eager to discover one of Romania’s most cherished national symbols.
The visit carried a special symbolism. Mircea’s home port, Constanța, and Fort Lauderdale are sister cities, both shaped by the sea and connected by a shared maritime identity. It was therefore fitting that one of Romania’s most iconic vessels found such a warm welcome in a city that, in many ways, speaks the same nautical language.
The visit culminated in a public open-ship day that transformed the decks of Mircea into a place of dialogue, discovery, and friendship. Guests explored the ship’s history, learned about life at sea, met the crew, and experienced firsthand the traditions and values that have shaped generations of Romanian naval officers.
Now, after departing Fort Lauderdale, Mircea is once again under sail along the U.S. East Coast. Benefiting from favorable winds, the crew and cadets continue their training while preparing for the prestigious SAIL250 events. A special moment at sea came with the sighting of the USCG Eagle, the training ship of the United States Coast Guard — a symbolic encounter between two historic vessels that will reunite in Norfolk.
The journey continues with stops in Norfolk (June 18–23), Baltimore (June 25–July 1), New York (July 4–8), and Boston (July 11–16), offering Americans an opportunity to step aboard a living piece of Romanian history.
Some ambassadors speak from podiums. Others arrive under sail.
Mircea continues to do both. 🇷🇴⚓🇺🇸
