Launched in April 2026, Operation Steadfast Promise has been an ongoing, historic FBI campaign established to combat violent crime, fugitive matters, drug trafficking, and gang activity on Tribal Lands. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the FBI, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and several federal, state, and local partners.

On June 1, 2026, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota announced the arrest of Mason Big Crow as a result of this initiative. Big Crow, the former Treasurer of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, was charged through federal indictment with Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance. The indictment alleges that Big Crow led a drug trafficking organization and used Tribal funds to pay couriers to transport narcotics, including fentanyl and co***ne, from Denver, Colorado, to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
