Did you know that while you watch the , you're actually witnessing ?

⚽ Sports, in this case , can often be an important means of forging cultural connections that foster mutual respect and understanding. The U.S. State Department seeks to foster official dialogue through several organized programs, including the Sports Envoy Program and the Sports Visitor Program.

⚽ Today, the U.S. and Paraguay will face off in the World Cup, bringing fans of both countries together around a more unofficial shared love of soccer! This isn't the first soccer encounter between the two countries, however, and in fact the two met at the first-ever World Cup in 1930, where the U.S. won, 3-0. As it stands, the U.S. comes out on top in past match-ups with Paraguay, with 4 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws.

⚽ Who are you rooting for tonight?

For this week’s , we are covering . The United States established diplomatic relations with the government of Buenos Ayres, the predecessor to the modern Argentine state, in 1823, forming one of Washington’s oldest partnerships in the western hemisphere. The relationship has not always been smooth-sailing. Economic competition for the European marketplace placed these two agricultural titans at odds throughout much of the early twentieth century, with Argentine neutrality throughout much of World War II leaving the nation the sole nation in Latin America excluded from American Wartime Aid. The latter half of the century saw a gradual realignment between the two nations, culminating in Argentina’s 1998 designation as a Major Non-NATO Ally to the U.S - a position held only by two other nations in the Hemisphere. Today, relations stand at one of their warmest points in history. In 2025, the United States extended a (highly conditional) $20 billion currency swap line in an effort to stabilize the Argentine peso and the position of the new Argentine political administration.

📚 Summer Reads is back!
This week, Amb. (ret.) Barbara Stephenson recommends The Avoidable War: The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the U.S. and Xi Jinping's China by Kevin Rudd.

"Although a bit dated, it provides a framework for understanding how Xi sees the world, with short summaries of China's relations with Japan, Russia, the US and other countries and regions as well as a "ten circles" approach to understanding what motivates Xi, such as remaining in power."
