On this day in 1944, the largest seaborne invasion in history was conducted, ultimately changing the trajectory of the Second World War. Today, we honor the thousands of allied troops who fought boldly and bravely for something greater than themselves. May we continue to honor their legacy and remember that freedom is never free.

Next month, we celebrate 250 years of American independence. As we approach this significant anniversary, this series, Road to 250, honors the trailblazers who came before us, whose work has been marked by innovation and ingenuity. Their legacy is the foundation upon which the freedoms we enjoy today are built, and in which the hope of a prosperous future for our nation is rooted.

In 1862, the Homestead Act opened the door for Americans to build farms, families, and futures, granting 160-acre plots of public land to those willing to settle and cultivate it for at least five years. The Act ultimately distributed over 270 million acres, nearly 10% of the land in the United States – helping to expand opportunity and development across the country. We are deeply grateful to the generations before us, whose dedication and perseverance created a lasting legacy and established the United States as an agricultural powerhouse. We remain forever indebted to this industry for all it has done and continues to provide for our country.

Arkansas is a critical hub for our nation’s supply chain. The goods that move through Arkansas reach nearly every corner of the country, and our truckers play a role in that distribution. According to the Arkansas Truckers Association, 86.8% of communities in the state depend exclusively on trucks to move their goods.

Congressman Westerman understands the importance of this industry, which is why he was grateful for the opportunity to welcome the Arkansas Truckers Association to his Washington D.C. office this week. Talking about important issues like CDL reform and enforcement, cargo theft, truck parking, the need for transportation funding and infrastructure investment were highlights of the conversation. Coming right out of passing the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act out of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the Congressman was pleased to provide updates on how Congress is working to address each of these issues. He also looks forward to the House passing this excellent bipartisan package out of the house so that it can be sent to the Senate and signed into law.

The Wigington family understands the importance of timely and affordable health care. Raising two young children who benefit greatly from the care provided at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, they are constantly met with the high costs of therapy drugs, treatments, and hospital bills. Congressman Westerman was honored to meet today with 5-year-old Evvie, who lives with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and her mom, Brittany. Evvie’s vibrancy, joy, and energy, combined with the resilience that is so evident within the Wigington family, are inspiring. And getting the opportunity to hear more about their story served as a wonderful reminder of how important the work here in Congress is to the well-being of the folks back home.

Congressman Westerman is not only proud of the excellent work Arkansas Children’s continues to deliver, but he is also proud to continue fighting in Congress for a health care system that lowers costs and expands coverage so that all Americans can receive the care they need.

Arkansas is a powerhouse producer of poultry, contributing greatly to our national supply. That’s why rendering is so important to our state’s ag industry. By recycling millions of pounds of animal byproducts companies like Tyson Foods play a critical role in supporting excellent nutritional benefits for farm animals, livestock, and even pets. Rendering reduces waste and invests more dollars into an industry that contributes so greatly to our state’s economy.

Congressman Westerman was glad to have the opportunity to meet with the North American Renderers Association during their annual fly-in as they discussed how Congress can continue to support this excellent solution to food waste, sustainability, and economic growth.

Arkansas proudly boasts some of the most abundant natural resources in the country. And beyond that, our agriculture industry continues to play a crucial role in our state’s economy. The National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology recognizes the great impact the Natural State has on the future of American security and prosperity – especially as it relates to biotechnology.

As a licensed engineer who graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Congressman Westerman was eager to attend this roundtable event and provide feedback on the future of implementing biotechnology, especially woody biomass, to expand the use of timber products and utilize the resources we have right here in our own backyard.

Today’s visit to the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana provided Congressman Westerman with the opportunity to meet with their new Chancellor, Dr. Ricky Tompkins, and hear about his vision for the future of not only UAHT but the surrounding community. We’ve got a lot of great higher education systems here in the Fourth District, and it’s always encouraging to see how they’re setting their students up for future success!
