Reports from Mr.Coxon's and other experts raising the alarm about the safety and capability of frontier AI models are deeply alarming.

I recently joined 20 of my colleagues in Congress to raise concerns with Anthropic and Open AI about the risks that frontier AI models can pose and demand answers about recent security incidents. Congress has an urgent role to play in both oversight and accountability of AI development to ensure our communities have the transparency and protections we deserve.

Their warnings echo concerns that other artificial intelligence experts have voiced in recent months, as calls increase for a slowdown in the pace of development.

It was an honor to meet the eight brilliant HBCU undergraduate students who spent the summer at Innovative Genomics Institute labs across the UC system at part of the UC-HBCU Rising Stars program!

They are working on the cutting edge of technology - watching them present their work and learning more about the future of genomic research was incredibly inspiring and exciting. You all have bright futures ahead of you, and I know you all will be the ones inventing the cures of the future!

It’s Labor Day.

In 1946, 400 clerks at Kahn’s & Hastings (the old Emporium) –most of them women– walked out after a worker was fired for joining a union. When police escorted scab trucks through the picket line, trolley operators left their cars sitting in the street. Longshoremen came off the docks in solidarity. Oakland was shut down for two and a half days, and it is still the last city-wide general strike this country has had.

The landmark labor laws of the 1930s, including the Social Security Act, left out farm and domestic workers because an overwhelming majority of those workers were Black. Millions of workers still risk their lives in the shadows now, with no representation.

Legislation like the PRO Act and the National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights would end that. Ask every member of Congress whether they have signed on.

Last weekend, I stopped by the Berkeley Flea Market where I spent the afternoon browsing locally-made goods, listening to great music, meeting local business owners and community members, and trying some delicious food!

I joined Congressman Al Green and Bonnie Watson Coleman in demanding the Department of Housing and Urban Development stop proposed funding changes that threaten the Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) and local fair housing organizations.

Local fair housing organizations handle more than 74 percent of housing discrimination complaints nationwide and are critical to ensuring that people’s housing rights are protected.

Rep. Brandon Gill recently introduced H.R. 9854, a bill that would re-interpret the 14th Amendment and rewrite the laws around which children are granted citizenship.

The House Oversight Committee has no business dictating citizenship and who is counted as American when the Supreme Court has already upheld and reaffirmed birthright citizenship THIS YEAR. The Constitution and 14th Amendment are crystal clear - if you were born in America, you’re an American. Period.
