Upper elementary students presented their ancient civilizations research to VERY curious younger students today. They ate Mayan corn, played ancient ball games, and watched a play about Ancient Greece. We love when older students teach younger ones - it’s such a great aspect of the Montessori method!

Our East End upper elementary students had an amazing multiday outdoor trip at last week. They canoed, saw beavers and snakes and LOTS of rabbits, learned to use compasses and build a fire, and made their bonds even stronger. We’re impressed by their bravery and growth (and s’mores technique)!

Our libraries are much-loved centers of our schools. At Brookland, the numbers tell the story of just how much love the books get. Speaking of love….happy Pride! We love being a school that welcomes and celebrates all students, staff, and families, and teaches our students about the diversity that brings us so much joy. 🏳️‍🌈❤️📖 🏳️‍⚧️

A School Community for Everyone! We loved talking about — and demonstrating — how everyone benefits from inclusion for kids with disabilities. This event included crafts, a read-aloud, discussion, lots of books, and lots of joy! Thanks to our FTA and our local Brookland ANC for supporting this community event.

After three years in their current community, our primary and lower elementary students are ready to step up to the next level. It’s the time of year when kindergartners and third graders visit their new classroom for next year. This week during their visits, East End students completed a Polygon Project and community art work - including pioneers ready to be the first in our newest, yet-to-be-named upper elementary classroom! We can’t wait to see what our students do up there.

Last week, East End hosted an exciting Go-Go performance led by local musician Charles Tolbert, also known as “Bliss the Violinist.” Bliss was joined by percussionist JB Shoatz and DJ Magic for a high-energy, interactive musical experience. Students became part of the performance by playing rhythm sticks, dancing, and participating in call-and-response singing. The show gave students an opportunity to experience the joy and energy of Go-Go music while learning about the rich musical culture of Washington, DC!
