This national dog day, we have a confession to make about the Australian Shepherd.

They're American 🇺🇸🐶

Their ancestors trace back to European sheepdogs brought to California in the 19th century, alongside sheep from Australia - where they got their name.

We're still going to claim them as honourary Aussies. Happy National Dog Day!

118 years ago, Sydney stopped to welcome America.

In 1908, 16 U.S. Navy battleships of the Great White Fleet sailed into Sydney Harbour as part of their voyage around the world.

Around 80,000 Australians packed South Head to watch them arrive, kicking off days of parades and celebrations.
