DPR Compost Cooperative Network

DPR Compost Cooperative Network Network of over 40 critter proof compost bins throughout DC capable of composting over 40 tons of material per month.

The DPR community compost cooperative network uses new critter proof and smell proof compost bins designed by Urban Farm Plans, to allow trained community members to compost food scraps with garden waste from DPR and partner DPR gardens. To join each member must take an hour training and help process compost 1-hour a month. Each cooperative can handle around 100 active composters or about 1 ton of

materlal a month. By the end of 2016 DPR will have 50 workign bins with a capacity of 5000 people actively composting or 50 tons of material a month with no operating costs and no carbon footprint. Currently there are close to 1000 people composting with us. For more info check out this link:

The DC Parks and Rec (DPR) Communal Farm Leader program trains community members for FREE on a variety of ways to grow food in urban environments in exchange for helping expand weekend access at DPR Communal Farms during the growing season. This program is a great chance to learn how to grow food, from seed to harvest, while helping feed your community. Thanks to the help of the 2024 Communal Farm Leaders, the communal farms grew and gave away over 14K pounds of produce to 100s of community members in need in 2024. We hope to grow even more food this year with your help!

Requirements
From Mid-February to October Farm Leaders will
• Receive a combination of hands-on and virtual training on various topics including building garden beds and soil prep, propagation and planting, pest, disease, and w**d management, food justice, etc.

From April to October Farm leaders will
• Help host weekend open farm hours at a DPR Communal Farm of their choice, where participants will learn how to grow and co-manage a communal production farm. Open farm hours are supervised times where community members can visit a communal farm to volunteer, learn, and/or harvest. *No prior growing knowledge is required. Participants will be taught everything they need to know to help grow at communal farms and co-host weekend open farm hours.
