✨ Trailblazing Black & Brown Women in Politics: Part Two ✨

While names like Shirley Chisholm and Kamala Harris are well known, many other Black and Brown women have paved the way in Democratic politics—breaking barriers, driving policy change, and amplifying marginalized voices. Here are a few more you should know:

🔹 Mary Ann Shadd Cary – A pioneering activist, educator, and journalist, Shadd Cary was the first Black woman in North America to publish a newspaper and one of the first Black women to attend law school, using her platform to advocate for abolition and women's rights.

🔹 Soledad Chávez de Chacón (NM) – In 1924, she became the first Latina to serve as a U.S. state governor (acting Governor of New Mexico).

🔹 Carol Moseley Braun (IL) – The first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate (1992), she shattered ceilings and championed progressive policies.

These history-making leaders paved the way for today’s Black and Brown women in politics, showing that representation and resilience go hand in hand.

In the 119th Congress, women hold 28% of voting seats, mirroring the previous term. Notably, 30 Black women and 13 Hispanic women serve in the House, reflecting strides in representation. However, women still comprise a smaller share of Congress compared to their 51% proportion in the U.S. adult population (Sources: American Pew Center and People.com).

Encouragingly, for the first time, two Black women—Senators Lisa Blunt Rochester and Angela Alsobrooks—are serving simultaneously in the Senate.

These milestones highlight progress and the ongoing need to support Black and Brown women pursuing political office. Diverse representation ensures that all voices are heard in our nation's legislative processes.
