Institute of Education Sciences

Institute of Education Sciences Welcome to the Institute of Education Sciences page. Commenting guidelines: http://bit.ly/1Tb2u7O Department of Education. Thomas W.

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is the independent research, evaluation, and statistics arm of the U.S. By law, our work and activities must be free of partisan political influence. Our mission is to provide scientific evidence on which to ground education practice and policy and to share this information in formats that are useful and accessible to educators, parents, policymakers, rese

archers, and the public. We work toward that mission through six broad types of work:

1) We provide data that describe how well the United States is educating its students;
2) We conduct surveys and sponsor research projects to understand where education needs improvement and how these improvements might be made;
3) We fund development and rigorous testing of new approaches for improving education outcomes for all students;
4) We conduct large-scale evaluations of federal education programs and policies;
5) We provide resources to increase use of data and research in education decision making; and
6) We support advancement of statistics and research through specialized training and development of methods and measures. IES is made up for four centers--the National Center for Education Research, the National Center for Education Statistics, the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance, and the National Center for Special Education Research. Brock, the commissioner of education research, has been delegated the duties of IES director. Learn more about IES on our website at http://ies.ed.gov/aboutus/.
