DC-Area Veterans, Get Ready for Flu Season!
Your DC VAMC Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Team is sharing important wellness information to help protect you from seasonal flu.

Remember, eligible Veterans may visit an in-network urgent care or local retail pharmacy conveniently located and at no cost, beginning today. Reference the photo below for important billing information, present your VA ID card, and be sure to share your vaccination date, type and location with your VA primary care provider. Sharing your vaccination information helps to keep your VA health record updated.

Beginning September 28, 2026, your VA primary care clinic will offer free flu shots during your appointment.

The Atrium Walk-In Flu Shot Clinic opens October 5 - November 20, 2026, and operates on weekdays, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the main facility in DC.

Your DC VA Medical Center team relies on your feedback to continually improve care, service, and processes. Shortly after an appointment or inpatient stay at the main medical center, you may receive a Survey of Health Experiences of Patients (SHEP) notice or link through text, email, or postal mail. Please complete and submit the SHEP survey to help us better serve you in the future.

Your response is voluntary and confidential. Please consider speaking with your DC VAMC Office of Patient Experience and Advocacy, 202-745-8588, when you have compliments and concerns.

An Honor DC VAMC Staff & Veterans Will Not Forget:

This month, DC VA Medical Center Executive Director Vamsee Potluri welcomed Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex - a former British Army Officer, Afghanistan Veteran, and founder of the Invictus Games - for a private visit with Veterans and health care team members.

Prince Harry joined a music therapy session with Veteran-residents in our Community Living Center, and he even sang along and embraced our therapy puppy! During the visit, he also received an overview about advanced Radiation Oncology technology, witnessed physical therapy sessions in action, discussed mental health care and treatment advancements, and toured the Women's Health Clinic.

The team and the Veterans we serve are still very excited and honored to have had the opportunity to meet and engage with Prince Harry just ahead of the news about his family's return to the United Kingdom.

The DC VAMC outreach team will offer eligibility and enrollment information for Veterans who are not yet enrolled for VA health, health screenings, social work services and much more. We look forward to meeting you in your community!

VA Eligibility and Enrollment Specialist will be on-hand to offer information, answer questions, and assist with enrollment, which is accessed by calling 877-222-8387 or online at va.gov/health-care.

VA enrollment offers you access to primary and specialty care, preventative health screenings, access to prescriptions, medical equipment and much more. Enroll to receive the benefits you have earned.

The Freedom Garden Project
Your DC VA Medical Center staff is teaming up to grow Veteran wellness!

What started as an idea by a DC VAMC registered nurse has become the Freedom Garden - a pesticide-free courtyard garden growing fresh produce for Veterans across the District of Columbia and areas of Maryland and Northern Virginia. Bringing together nurses, physicians, technicians, facilities and administrative team members, Veterans, community volunteers to plant, prune and harvest, this project is truly preventative health in action.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of vaccines for people of all ages. Your DC VA Medical Center team encourages all Veterans to stay current on routine vaccines including, flu, pneumonia, shingles, and Tdap.

Be sure to review your personal vaccination records with your VA provider. You can request an appointment via MyHealtheVet or by calling 202-745-8577.

Please join your DC VA Medical Center team in congratulating Ms. Lucile A. Lisle, Recreation Therapist, for her recent AMVETS award, presented during the 20th Annual Awards Banquet hosted by the Department of the District of Columbia, recognizing her 20+ years of dedication and service to Veterans.

Ms. Lisle is honored to have had the opportunity to co-treat Veterans at DC VAMC and its Community Living Center alongside VA providers, therapists, neuropsychology fellows, and researchers as well as working to guide new therapists and presenting at conferences. Ms. Lisle has partnered to provide Veterans with physical, occupational, music, equine therapies, and more.

Ms. Lisle is grateful for her work and times where she worked alongside AMVETS, especially with Mr. Johnnie Collins, who is a valued partner and Veteran who continues to serve Veterans.
