⭐ EPA Employee Spotlight ⭐
Meet James Szykman, a Senior Research Engineer in our Office of Applied Science and Environmental Solutions!
Since 1999, James has been on assignment at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Langley Research Center, placing him in a unique position to work across federal agencies to enable the use of advanced technologies for scientific research focused on national needs regarding air pollution monitoring. He enjoys the ability to work across organizations and serve as the "connective tissue" between scientific discovery and public health protection.
Earlier in his career, he helped develop the EPA Remote Sensing Information Gateway (RSIG) to cut satellite data access times from days to minutes for air quality professionals.
James was recently recognized by the Partnership for Public Service as an honoree for the 2026 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals. He considers this one of the highest professional honors of his career as a civil servant, and a direct reflection of the incredible public servants he’s collaborated with over the decades. He received this honor for his role in creating a more comprehensive way to monitor the atmosphere, including NASA's Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) satellite mission.
Colleagues may not know that James’ upbringing in northeast Pennsylvania's Anthracite coal region—along with his family’s closely tied history to the hardships of early energy production—shaped his perspective on the importance of human health, worker safety, and environmental protection.
Thank you for making a difference at EPA and beyond!
