Dolly Parton showed this world what it looks like to lead with love.

She stood with our community long before it was easy.

Her voice created a world where LGBTQ+ people feel seen and celebrated.

All of us at HRC will miss her dearly — and we will carry forward the light she shared with us.

Lou Sullivan was a transgender author and activist known for his advocacy on behalf of trans men. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sullivan was one of the first known transgender men to publicly identify as gay.

After Sullivan moved to San Francisco, he became deeply involved in LGBTQ+ advocacy with the Milwaukee’s Gay People’s Union and Janus Information Facility.

Sullivan began organizing quarterly FTM get-togethers for trans men and founded the organization that would become FTM International, in addition to publishing the FTM Newsletter. Soon after, he learned he had contracted AIDS. According to his biographer, he was the first trans man known to be living with the illness.

He published two notable books before his death in 1991, “Information For the Female-to-Male Crossdresser and Transsexual,” and a biography, “From Female to Male: The Life of Jack Bee Garland.”

Sullivan kept 24 diaries documenting his life, transition, sexuality, and the HIV/AIDS crisis. They were later published as part of “We Both Laughed in Pleasure: The Selected Diaries of Lou Sullivan, 1961–1991.”

But we're not done yet. This is the midterm year where our rights, our representation, and our beliefs in Equality will be on the ballot. So help us this year by showing up! We have Events, we have Phone Banks (virtual, national, & local), Block walks, and fundraising to get Pro-Equality Candidates elected.
