Today we celebrate 118 years of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps!

From its earliest days, the Navy Nurse Corps has embodied skill, resilience, and unwavering service. What began as a small cadre of pioneering women has grown into a vital force supporting Sailors, Marines, and their families around the world—on ships, in combat zones, in hospitals, and wherever care is needed most.

More than a century later, their mission endures: to heal, to lead, and to serve at the heart of naval readiness.

Yesterday, VADM (Ret.) Nowell was in Millington, TN with city leaders and partners like Navy League Memphis where Mayor Larry Dagen officially signed to secure the Lone Sailor Statue for the city—an important step in recognizing Millington’s deep-rooted naval legacy and establishing a lasting tribute where residents and visitors can reflect on the service and sacrifice of Sailors past, present, and future.

Earlier this week, the The Office of the Chief of Naval Operations hosted his welcome social for officers, senior enlisted leaders, and Senior Executive Service members participating in the Navy Executive Development Program (NFLEX) at the Navy Memorial.

NFLEX brings together leaders from across the Fleet to strengthen strategic thinking, foster collaboration, and prepare the Navy’s most senior leaders for the challenges ahead.

We are honored to serve as the home for moments that shape the future of naval leadership.

Last night, our President & CEO VADM (Ret.) John Nowell had the honor of serving as keynote speaker at the Scouting America National Capital Area Council’s 'Scouting Salutes the Military' Gala—held during the Month of the Military Child, a fitting reminder of the families and young people who stand alongside service.

In his remarks, he reflected on a lifetime of service that began long before his 42 years in the Navy, “Long before the uniform, I was a Scout. The values I learned—duty, integrity, perseverance—weren’t just lessons for a moment in time. They shaped how I approached leadership, how I made decisions, and how I served.”

He also presented Sophia Delk Reyes—a military child and recipient of the Military Scout Excellence Award—with a challenge coin, recognizing her Eagle Project supporting children at Walter Reed. The moment resonated personally, as his son Johnny will soon graduate from medical school there.

The connection between Scouting and military service is a natural one. Both are grounded in service above self, leadership through action, and a commitment to something greater than any one individual. It was an evening that highlighted not just shared values, but the next generation already putting them into practice.

We were incredibly honored that Military Child Education Coalition chose the United States Navy Memorial as the setting for their luncheon today during the Month of the Military Child. MCEC’s work - supporting military-connected children with the tools and resources they need to be college-, work-, and life-ready - reflects just how important this month is.

It’s a powerful reminder that service doesn’t just belong to those in uniform. It’s carried by families, by communities—and by the children who grow up with resilience, and adaptability beyond their years.

We’re proud to be a place where their stories are recognized, their sacrifices are acknowledged, and their impact is celebrated.
