🐞 The first week of June is International Nature Journaling Week! As Albert Einstein once said:
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” NCEI has some great ideas about how you can enjoy nature while becoming a citizen scientist.

🌸 Citizen science is the participation of the public in gathering and collaborating of scientific research.

NOAA experts have determined that the fourth global coral bleaching event likely concluded in mid-2025 following unprecedented heat stress across the world’s coral reefs.

Between early 2023 and mid-2025, bleaching-level heat stress impacted 84% of global coral reef areas across the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, with mass bleaching documented in at least 83 countries and territories.

Researchers are continuing to study coral reefs that showed signs of resilience despite prolonged heat exposure, helping improve our understanding of coral heat tolerance and inform future restoration strategies.

While the global event appears to have subsided, ocean temperatures remain elevated compared to previous decades, and NOAA is forecasting continued bleaching risks for this summer and fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

🌀 June 1 is the first day of Atlantic hurricane season! NCEI has the data you need to stay informed and prepared for this season with the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) project.

🌧️ IBTrACS is the most complete global collection of tropical cyclones available. This publicly-accessible resource combines recent and historical tropical cyclone data from across multiple sources to create a comprehensive cyclone dataset. IBTrACS was a collaborative effort, and was produced alongside the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres, and with other organizations from around the world.

Today marks the beginning of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

This year, NOAA researchers will be working with technology industry partners to gather data from the most dangerous part of hurricanes, including at the air-sea interface and at lower altitudes in the hurricane eyewall where crewed aircraft and ships can not safely go.
