Did you know? 🇺🇸🇪🇸
⛪ The historic San Miguel Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is considered the oldest church in the United States still in use today.
Built around 1610 as a community church for the enlisted men, servants, and laborers of the town's Spanish officials, the chapel has witnessed more than four centuries of history. After being partially destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, it was rebuilt in 1710 under Governor José Chacón, Marqués de la Peñuela.
✨ Inside, visitors can find paintings and statues dating back to the 1700s, including a statue of St. Michael carved in Mexico around 1700 and brought to Santa Fe by Franciscan friars. The chapel also houses the historic San José bell, which dates from the time of the American Civil War.
Today, San Miguel Chapel stands as a unique symbol of the deep historical and cultural ties between Spain and the United States.
