We talk a lot about healthy babies. Are we talking enough about healthy mothers?

Those familiar pink and blue hospital blankets are often one of the first things wrapped around a newborn. But what about the person who brought that baby into the world?

Maryland artist Lex Marie transformed those blankets into a powerful symbol, calling attention to the Black maternal health crisis and the importance of protecting mothers.

Her work is a reminder that we can't separate a baby's health and well-being from that of their mother. Because believing in babies can't stop at the baby. It has to include the health, safety, and support of the people raising them, too.
