Statesment on Ukraine
While the Polish American Congress Washington Metropolitan Division(PAC WMD) fully supports Ukraine in a just and brave fight for its independence, freedom and territorial integrity against Russian aggression;
PAC WMD is expressing strong disappointment with Ukrainian leadership decisions that constantly promotes and glorify UPA organisation, figures and symbols from the Ukraine past which were responsible for planning atrocious genocide of over hundred thousands of Polish victims of Volhynia region on pre war Poland territory in 1943. UPA was a Nazi Germany allied organization not only responsible for genocide of Poles, but also for murdering Ukrainians who refused to participate in the genocide, or those who tried to warn Poles on planned atrocious raids. UPA also collaborated with NAZI Germany in the Holocaust.
In 2022, despite painful memories of 1943 Ukrainian UPA Genocide of over 100 000 Polish victims, the people of Poland opened their homes to shelter up to 2 million Ukrainian refugees. Rather than relying heavily on state-run camps, Polish citizens drove to the border to pick up strangers and took in an estimated half of all the Ukrainians who fled their country following the Russian invasion. Poland has sacrificially supported Ukraine in its defensive struggle since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
Therefore PAC WMD is expressing strong disappointment with Ukraine President Zelensky's recent decision to name one of military units after "heroes of UPA".
PAC WMD fully supports the President of Poland Nawrocki's decision to revisit the decision to give president Zelensky the Order of White Eagle. Allies respect each other and do not denigrate sensitive historical memories with premeditation.
We call on the Ukrainian American sister organizations and to Ukrainian Americans to communicate to Ukrainian leadership, that:
To achieve the Ukrainian people's aspiration to join Western structures,
Ukraine needs to meet Western standards, stop blocking exhumations, and allow the proper burial of Polish victims of the 1943 genocide.
The Ukrainian leadership needs to stop the glorification of organizations responsible for genocide.
Furthermore, such glorification feeds directly into Putin’s propaganda that Russia is liberating Ukraine from Nazis, which does not help Ukraine internationally or in the U.S
