DC Hunger Solutions

DC Hunger Solutions D.C. Hunger Solutions is an initiative of the Food Research and Action Center. We've been fighting t In all aspects of its work, D.C.

Hunger Solutions, founded by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) in 2002 as a separately staffed and funded initiative, seeks to create a hunger-free community and improve the nutrition, health, economic security, and well-being of low-income District residents. Hunger Solutions utilizes a three-pronged strategy to overcome barriers and create self-sustaining connections between city reside

nts and nutritious food. Specifically, we:

Seek to improve public policies to end hunger, reduce poverty, promote nutrition, curb obesity, and increase the availability of healthy, affordable food in low-income areas. Maximize participation in all federal nutrition programs (SNAP/Food Stamps, school meals, early childhood nutrition programs, WIC, and summer meals) through a combination of vigorous outreach, removal of obstacles to participation, and close work with social service agencies. Educate the public and key audiences both to the stark reality of hunger’s existence in the midst of plenty and to solutions that are already at hand. Hunger Solutions engages a diverse set of stakeholders - city and federal government agencies, community-based and faith-based organizations, businesses, students and families, and anti-hunger and anti-poverty advocates. Our work reduces hunger, boosts family economic security, improves health and learning, and brings federal dollars into the District.

This month, and every month, we honor the legacy of Black leaders, organizers and food pioneers, advocating for advancements in our food system and answering the call of addressing hunger, poverty and its root causes.

We celebrate the legacies of Chef Leah Chase, Dr. Booker T. Whatley, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and so many others in their fight against food insecurity.

🚨‼️Urgent Action Needed🚨‼️

GOP leaders in both chambers — as part of their oversight of the District of Columbia’s budget — are moving quickly to overturn the District’s recently passed tax legislation that protects nearly $700 million in local revenue to enhance the D.C. Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC).

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has scheduled a mark-up on Feb. 4 for the House and Senate disapproval resolutions, S.J. Res 102/H.J. Res. 142. These resolutions would undo the D.C. Council’s decision to decouple the federal tax cuts that disproportionately benefit high‑income households.

If passed, the District would face major revenue losses, forcing deep cuts to schools, child care, and basic assistance programs. The rollback would increase child poverty and reverse progress on racial and tax equity. The EITC and CTC are expected to lift 78,000 children out of poverty and reduce child poverty by 20 percent.

Support the District of Columbia’s budget autonomy and investments in children and families by calling your Members of Congress, 202-225-3121, and urging them to vote no on the disapproval resolutions in the House and the Senate.
