More intense storms are overwhelming outdated stormwater systems.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers 2025 Infrastructure Report Card, stormwater earns a D, the lowest grade among water sectors. Many systems were built decades ago and were not designed for current conditions with more frequent, heavier rainfall, leading to flooding and polluted runoff.
Today, 703,000 miles of U.S. waterways are impaired.
Investing in green infrastructure—like rain gardens, wetlands, and permeable pavement—can help communities manage stormwater and build resilience to extreme weather.
🌧️🌿 The storms are changing. Our infrastructure must too.

🚨 Wastewater at a Breaking Point 🚨
America’s wastewater infrastructure received a D+ on the American Society of Civil Engineers 2025 Infrastructure Report Card, reflecting systems that are aging faster than they’re being renewed.
Across the country, nearly 17,500 wastewater treatment plants support public health and environmental protection. However, the renewal and replacement rate for major projects has dropped from 3% to just 2%, increasing the risk of system failures.
The Report Card also shows failures in collection systems are rising, a clear sign that decades of underinvestment are catching up. Smart asset management can help utilities stretch limited dollars, but it can’t substitute for sustained, long‑term investment.
This Water Week, let’s invest in the infrastructure we all rely on — even when we don’t see it.

Happy ! The critical water infrastructure networks we depend on daily have seen improvements in recent years, but we still face significant funding shortages to address growing needs. Let's continue modernizing the systems we rely on most!

One year ago we released the 2025 Report Card for America's Infrastructure, assigning 18 categories of infrastructure a cumulative grade of 'C', the highest since the Report Card began in 1998. The report continues to be the leading advocacy tool in the media and on Capitol Hill for spotlighting our infrastructure needs.
