The BEP had its foundations in 1862 with workers signing, separating, and trimming sheets of United States Notes in the Treasury building. Gradually, more and more work, including engraving and printing, was entrusted to the organization. Within a few years, the BEP was producing Fractional Currency, revenue stamps, government obligations, and other security documents for many federal agencies. In

1877, the BEP became the sole producer of all United States currency. The addition of postage stamp production to its workload in 1894 established the BEP as the nation's security printer, responding to the needs of the U.S. Today, the BEP no longer produces government obligations or postage stamps, but it still holds the honor of being the largest producer of government security documents with production facilities in Washington, DC, and in Fort Worth, Texas. If you are in the Ft. Worth, Texas-area, join us at BEP’s Western Currency Facility’s Spring Employee Craftsmanship Demonstrations this week, today through Friday, March 20!

Public tours are , and the Visitor Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (CT).

Meet currency designers, engravers, plate makers, photoengravers and plate printers! Employees from different production processes will be in the Visitor Center each day, beginning at 9 a.m., to explain their role in the U.S. currency printing process. See how U.S. currency was printed circa 1900 using BEP's refurbished spider press. Learn how Offset plates are made and how Intaglio printing plates are “grown” in a nickel solution. And, you’ll really enjoy the challenging and fun Quality Assurance Lab’s “Attention to Detail” activity. Great for everyone! See you there!

The last tours of the year for BEP’s Fort Worth, Texas facility is today, Friday, December 19, at 2:30 p.m. and the gift shop closes at 3:30 p.m. (CT). Incoming mail and special deliveries are suspended during this time. Normal operations resume on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
