In celebration of Black Business Month, the Mayor’s Office on African American Affairs is spotlighting the Go-Go Museum & Café, a Black-owned cultural destination preserving and celebrating DC’s official music in the great Ward 8.

Director Lamont Carey, of MOCA talked to Ronald Moten, Founder & CEO about the vision behind the Go-Go Museum & Café, the importance of preserving DC’s go-go legacy, and what it means to build a cultural destination in Historic Anacostia.

Through music, history, interactive experiences, and community, the Go-Go Museum & Café is helping ensure that the story of go-go and the people who built it continue to be celebrated for generations to come.

This Black Business Month, we’re spotlighting the Black businesses and cultural institutions keeping DC culture alive.

August is National Black Business Month, and the Mayor’s Office on Community Affairs is proud to highlight the remarkable businesses shaping Ward 8.
Today, we’re spotlighting Marion Barry Avenue Market & Café by Dreaming Out Loud — a space expanding healthy food access and strengthening community in a ward with only one major grocery store. Health begins with food, and it grows through community.
The market will offer a demo kitchen for nutrition classes, a welcoming café for neighbors to connect, and events that uplift the voices and history of Ward 8. By hiring locally and partnering with regional farmers and food producers, it invests directly in the local economy and families East of the River.
During our visit, Director Julian Purdy of MOVA met with Jaren Hill Lockridge, Director of Strategic Partnerships, to discuss how this space will support residents, students, and seniors with healthy food and deeper community connection.

To continue our celebration of Black Business Month, the Mayor’s Office on African American Affairs is proud to recognize Sapodilla’s Authentic Caribbean Cuisine, a Black-owned business bringing the flavors of the Caribbean to the Great Ward 8.

Director Snider of the Mayors Office on Caribbean Community Affairs spoke with founder Samantha Abrams to hear the story behind Sapodilla’s, and what it means to build and grow a business in Historic Anacostia.

Inspired by her Guyanese heritage, Sapodilla’s has been serving authentic Caribbean cuisine since 2007. Today, its Ward 8 location continues that legacy while contributing to the growth and vitality of the Anacostia community.

In celebration of Black Business Month, the Mayor’s Office on African American Affairs spotlights DCity Smokehouse, a Black owned DC business serving up award winning, DC style barbecue since 2013.

We spoke with owner, founder, and operator Melvin Hines to hear more about his journey as a Black entrepreneur and what it means to build a business rooted in the District and its communities.

From its Florida Avenue to its expansion east of the river in Historic Anacostia, DCity Smokehouse continues to bring great food and community together.
