Older people are used to being told to eat healthy, save diligently, downsize wisely, and exercise regularly. But those things can be far easier for some than for others. Disparities exist.

In her new book, “The Second Fifty: Answers to the 7 Big Questions of Midlife and Beyond,” economist Debra Whitman persuasively connects individual concerns about getting older to societal issues, linking education, wages, and social support—as well as access to recreation and clean air and water—to the quantity and quality of our years. Her book is a call to action not only to people of all ages but to policymakers, too.

Whitman holds a PhD in economics, has served as a researcher for the Social Security Administration, ran the U.S. Senate Aging Committee, and is the chief public policy officer at . All proceeds from sales of the book go to the AARP Foundation
