The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act.

💬 "The Lindsey Graham bill, along with other strong sanctions steps by our partners against the source of this war – against Russia – is an extremely powerful tool that can stop this terrorist war and bring Russia to the point where it has to make peace", highlighted President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and noted that sanctions must be strong for all efforts for peace to succeed.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that it is time for all partners to follow up with further sanctions, including introducing a full embargo, full entry bans for Russian combatants, full restrictions on the shadow fleet, and full blocking sanctions against Russia's military-industrial complex: "This is the right response to Russia's refusal to end its terror: uncompromising pressure on the aggressor to defund its war machine."

Ukraine deeply appreciates the bipartisan leadership in the House and all members who supported this legislation, and honors the legacy of Senator Lindsey Graham, whose name stands with this vital effort to defend freedom and strengthen peace.

In August 2026, Ukraine continued efforts to return children deported or forcibly transferred by Russia and those trapped in occupied territories, while strengthening international pressure, accountability and reintegration.

103 children were returned this month, bringing the total to 2,525.

Key developments:

🔹 Lithuania allocated €600,000 to seven Ukrainian NGOs supporting children’s return, rehabilitation, families and war-crimes documentation.

🔹 New Zealand became the 51st member of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.

🔹 Ukraine urged its diplomatic missions to systematically raise children’s return, expand the Coalition and strengthen support for the UN General Assembly resolution.

🔹 On 27 August, Bring Kids Back UA and the Office of the Prosecutor General brought together 50 representatives of state institutions, civil society and international partners to improve coordination in documenting crimes against Ukrainian children.

🔹 Ukraine notified four individuals of suspicion over the deportation of 53 children from occupied Donetsk and Makiivka. None has returned to Ukraine; 28 were reportedly placed with Russian families.

🔹 A Ukrainian child listed as missing since 2022 was identified as serving in the Russian military — the first documented case of its kind involving a child from Ukraine’s “Children of War” registry.

🔹 The EU was preparing sanctions against 27 Russian individuals and entities over alleged involvement in the deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children ahead of the Toronto conference.

🔹 International public figures met Ukrainian children affected by deportation, occupation and return, while the “Field of Memory” exhibition highlighted Russia’s killing, deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children.

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian children remain under Russian control.

There can be no just and lasting peace without their return.

The Embassy of Ukraine in the USA, together with Ukraine House, hosted a special celebration marking the 35th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence.

💬 "Peace is perhaps the most desired word for millions of Ukrainians," said Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Denys Sienik. “But for diplomacy to succeed, Ukraine must have the means to defend itself. At the same time, our partnership with the United States is about more than security; it is also about building the future together, creating opportunities, and strengthening our economies."

We were honored to hear remarks from Senator Richard Blumenthal; Congressman Michael McCaul, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Emeritus; Jonathan Greenstein, Deputy Under Secretary at the The U.S. Department of the Treasury; Ivana Zuzul, Senior Vice President at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and Stephanie Murphy, USUBC Chair of the Board of Directors and Vice President at Bayer; Ambassador Оксана Маркарова, Chair of the Board of Ukraine House, Advisor to the President of Ukraine on Reconstruction and Investment. They spoke about Ukraine's fight for freedom and the strength of the 🇺🇦🇺🇸 partnership. The evening was moderated by Misha Komadovsky, U.S. Correspondent at DW News.

Guests also had an opportunity to visit two exhibitions: “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra: 975 Years of History — 100 Years of Responsible Preservation,” highlighting the Lavra’s centuries-old heritage and preservation, and “Ukrainian Americans: A Legacy that Endures,” celebrating the enduring legacy of Ukrainian Americans.

Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Denys Sienik met with a delegation from Donetsk region: Yurii Vynokurov, First Deputy Head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration; Serhii Kalian, Head of the Bakhmut District State Administration and Chief of the Bakhmut District Military Administration; Oleksii Vorobiov, Head of the Siversk City Military Administration. Special pleasure was to welcome Marshall Mayer, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Ukraine Aid International.

The delegation shared firsthand perspectives on the difficult situation in the region under Russia’s ongoing attacks, their efforts to support communities and strengthen resilience, and their experience preparing for recovery and rebuilding.

The conversation also focused on strengthening the partnership between Donetsk region and Connecticut and finding new ways to support communities on the ground.

Russia attacked Ukrainian publishers and book warehouses 21 times over the summer, deliberately targeting the Ukrainian publishing industry, our nation’s culture and identity.

At the 9th Ukraine Action Summit in Washington, DC, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Denys Sienik thanked supporters of Ukraine from across the U.S. for advocating for Ukraine‘s freedom, more capabilities to defend itself, and confronting Russian propaganda and disinformation.

He stressed that as peace talks remain on the agenda, Russia must be judged by what it does – not what it says. Ukraine remains ready for negotiations, but lasting peace requires Russia to stop its attacks. Denys Sienik also emphasized the importance of passing the sanctions legislation in Congress to increase economic pressure on Russia.

As Russia continues daily air attacks against Ukraine, destroying its critical infrastructure and killing civilians, he called for continued support for Ukraine’s air defense and efforts to bring home Ukraine’s children abducted by Russia.

ℹ️ The Ukraine Action Summit is organized by the American Coalition for Ukraine, an alliance of more than 50 U.S.-based organizations working to mobilize support for Ukraine. The 9th Summit brings together more than 600 delegates from across the United States for briefings, training, and meetings with members of Congress.

Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Denys Sienik was pleased to welcome famous Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych to the Embassy and express appreciation for his advocacy to keep Russia from using sport as propaganda to whitewash its crimes against Ukraine.

Vladyslav has been a strong voice for Ukraine, including through his iconic helmet featuring portraits of Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives because of Russia’s war.
