Mumia gave a message on the Islamic Republic of Iran: In a message from prison written on paper plates, political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal stated the following:
“My young friends, Iran is showing the world (especially the 3rd world) how to fight against the Empire. Their drones are rewriting the rules of war. And countries across the Global South are studying this phase of the war for that use! They remind me of Vietnam poor country that whipped the most powerful army on earth... That’s where we are today. Love... Mumia”
The message of support for Iran seems to contradict an alleged signature from Mumia onto an open letter published by the Guardian that conflates the Islamic Republic of Iran with the United States, regarding them as “two blades of a scissors.”
The open letter has raised eyebrows since one of its signatories, Professor Robin D. G. Kelley, rescinded his signature after stating on social media that the conditions that lead to his signing of the open letter were “shady.”
This raises questions: based off this statement from Mumia in support of Iran, is it possible that someone forged his signature, or added his name without his consent to the open letter on the Guardian?
Mumia Abu-Jamal has been in prison for over four decades, following his arrest in December 1981. The former Black Panther’s imprisonment is widely condemned and protested as it is considered a brazen case of U.S. political persecution due to Mumia’s support for Black Liberation movements.
