Celebrating shared heritage, honoring legacies, strengthening ties
As the United States prepared to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Ambassador Nicole Bintner-Bakshian and Consul Jenna Liberatore traveled to the Midwest to celebrate U.S.–Luxembourg ties and honor the lasting legacy of Luxembourg immigrants who helped shape American life, culture, and communities. 🇱🇺🇺🇸
At Assisi Heights in Rochester, MN, the Ambassador and the Consul paid tribute to Mother Alfred Moes, co-founder of St. Mary’s Hospital, which laid the foundation to the renowned Mayo Clinic. The delegation also honored Mary Nilles, whose lifelong commitment to preserving Luxembourg heritage—including her efforts to support the restoration of the historic MARNACH HOUSE—has strengthened connections between Luxembourg and the Luxembourg-American community.
In Dubuque, IA, the delegation visited the Center for Dubuque History, home to rich archives—including works by Luxembourg immigrant Nicholas Gonner, in particular the Luxembourg Gazette—highlighting the Luxembourg-American story. Many thanks to the Center’s team and Claire from Congresswoman Ashley Hinson’s office for making the visit so special.
In St. Donatus, IA, and La Crosse, WI, exchanges with Luxembourg-American associations underscored their vital role in preserving traditions and passing stories across generations.
This trip—and the America250 celebrations—offer a meaningful moment to reflect on the generations of Luxembourgers who helped build communities and enrich the United States’ cultural fabric. Their legacy remains an integral part of America’s story—and a powerful reminder of what everyday people can achieve.
