International Development Institute (IDI) proudly presented the Status of Women in Biratnagar research report!

Biratnagar Metropolitan City organized a validation workshop that brought together 100 women leaders, entrepreneurs, psycho-counsellors, police officers, homemakers, LGBTQ+ representatives, and women with disabilities to review, verify, and strengthen the research findings. Their voices matter. Their experiences shape this data.

We listened. We learned. And now, under the esteemed guidance of Deputy Mayor Ms.Shilpa Nirala Karki, we are working towards finalizing this historic dataset covering 41,488 households one of the most comprehensive studies on women ever conducted in Biratnagar.

Deputy Mayor Shilpa Nirala Karki of Biratnagar also expressed confidence that “the report would help the local government formulate evidence-based, gender-responsive plans while preparing budgets and policies in the coming days.”

This report was prepared under the leadership of Dr. Chandra Upadhyay, PhD, and Dr. Roshan Adhikari, with GESI Expert Suzana Kansakar and team members Ritaza Paudel, Adarsh Bikram Sah, and Simran Shrestha. We would like to thank the volunteers and Biratnagar Metropolitan City for supporting us during the whole process.

This is more than a report. It's a foundation for change.

The International Development Institute (IDI) proudly represented Nepal at the two-day Regional Workshop on the Integrated Buddhist Circuit, held in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, India, from May 6–7, 2026. Organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, in collaboration with the South Asian Women's Network (SWAN) and the Tawang District Administration, the workshop brought together delegates from Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and India to advance a shared vision of sustainable, inclusive, and women-led tourism across South Asia. The program was inaugurated in the presence of Arunachal Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein, and Minister for Women and Child Development, Science and Technology, and Cultural Affairs, Dasanglu Pul.

At the opening ceremony, IDI's Country Director, Roshan Ghimire, underscored the transformative potential of a unified Buddhist Circuit, stating, "South Asia is home to some of the world's most sacred Buddhist heritage sites. By connecting these across Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, we have a rare opportunity to build a tourism model that is spiritually meaningful and economically empowering for local communities, especially women."

On the second day, IDI's Program Officer, Suzana Kansakar, delivered a presentation on key sites identified for Nepal's inclusion in the Buddhist Circuit from the sacred birthplace of Lord Buddha at Lumbini to ancient monastic sites in the Himalayan valleys, outlining a roadmap that prioritizes community participation and women-led tourism initiatives.

The Nepal delegation was led by Bagmati Province Member of Parliament, Former Tourism Minister, and Founder of T-HELP, Yankila Sherpa. Special appreciation to Veena Sikri, Ambassador, Founding Trustee & convener, South Asian Women’s Network, for your support. The Nepal team included representatives from the Nepal Tourism Board, the International Development Institute, T-HELP, Bar Pipal Bisauni Homestay, and Impact Adventure.

The Entrepreneurship Skill Building Program, organized by the U.S. Embassy, Nepal, completed its last edition of the nationwide journey in Pokhara, co-led by the InternationalDevelopment Institute (IDI) and Aadyanta Advisory. 25 emerging entrepreneurs from IT, agri-tourism , edtech, and creative industries came together for 2 days of uncomfortable, and necessary conversations about markets, systems, and scale, with one shared goal: building businesses that are investment-ready and export-ready.

The room had founders behind some of Pokhara's most interesting bets — specialty coffee, EV battery recycling, AI-powered school management, handwoven Himalayan textiles, and more. The diversity was the point. The program was led by Pavitra Bahadur Gautam, Santona Malakar, Anuja Adhikari and Roshan Ghimire — facilitators who didn't shy away from the hard questions and pushed the room to think beyond survival mode and answer the legal and compliance questions entrepreneurs often struggle with.

The conversation that engaged the room the most: Customer filtering matters more than customer volume. Not every customer is a good customer — and as you grow, the cost of the wrong ones compounds. Mission and vision aren't wall art. If your team doesn't feel it, hiring becomes a revolving door and ex*****on suffers at every layer.

What shifted most was the quality of questions in the room. From "how do I manage my team?" to "how do I reach the right customer?" From working inside the business to thinking about where growth actually lives.

That shift — from operator to founder — is where investment readiness begins.

The Entrepreneurship Skill-Building Programme is part of the U.S.–Nepal Commercial Diplomacy Series, an initiative of the U.S. Embassy in Nepal, co-led by the International Development Institute (IDI) and Aadyanta Advisory, in partnership with the Amcham Nepal and Global Impact Collective. Spanning all seven provinces, the programme is equipping nearly 200 entrepreneurs with practical skills in business planning, digital marketing, financial literacy, and investment readiness- building clear pathways from classroom to capital, and from local markets to export-ready enterprises.

“Nepal’s energy future is no longer just about power generation! It is about market formation, investment readiness, and regional competitiveness.”

On April 28 in Pokhara, we convened a high-level CEO Dialogue on “Energy Security, Market Formation, and Trade” as part of the U.S.–Nepal Commercial Diplomacy Series, supported by U.S. Embassy, Nepal.

Co-led by International Development Institute (IDI) and Aadyanta Advisory, in collaboration with Amcham Nepal, Confederation of Nepalese Industries, and Nepal Young Entrepreneurs' Forum, the session brought together business leaders, policymakers, investors, academia, and entrepreneurs to engage in a candid, solutions-oriented conversation.
The dialogue also reflected the core spirit of U.S.–Nepal Commercial Diplomacy—leveraging American innovation, global best practices, and a shared commitment to transparency, efficiency, and entrepreneurship to strengthen Nepal’s investment ecosystem.
At the center of the dialogue was Dr. Madan Uprety — a U.S.-based infrastructure finance leader advancing over $1.2B in hydropower investments (~1,000 MW) in Nepal through diaspora-linked capital.
What stood out most from the dialogue was the clear shift from viewing energy as a supply issue to understanding it as a system-wide market challenge. Dr. Uprety grounded the conversation in ex*****on realities—highlighting why hydropower projects often stall due to weak data integrity, collateral-heavy financing structures, contract enforcement gaps, and a shortage of skilled engineers. At the same time, he pointed to encouraging signs of progress, with approval timelines shrinking significantly and greater institutional responsiveness emerging. The discussion also pushed the room to think beyond generation—toward demand creation, including data centers and industrial corridors, and regional energy trade as a pathway to absorb surplus. Perhaps most compelling was the emphasis on the diaspora as a strategic lever, not just for capital, but for bringing global practices, discipline, and networks into Nepal’s infrastructure ecosystem.
Reflecting both global experience and locally grounded insight, Dr. Uprety noted, “Nepal’s energy transition is not just about generating power—it is about building markets, unlocking capital, and aligning systems to deliver at scale. The opportunity is real, but ex*****on will define whether we lead or lag.”
The CEO Dialogue Series continues to serve as a practical platform moving beyond conversations to connections, commitments, and catalytic action.

We just wrapped our 6th edition of the US Embassy Nepal Entrepreneurship Skill-Building Program — this time in Bhairahawa, Lumbini Province.
30 emerging entrepreneurs from IT, tech, light manufacturing, and agri-processing came together for 2 days of hard conversations about markets, systems, and scale with one clear goal: building businesses that are investment-ready and export-ready.
The first session was led by Ashutosh Tiwari on the real pains of emerging entrepreneurs — cash flow management, building and managing teams, HR practices, and how to raise funds. Kamal Gyawali, brought his CA expertise, and followed with a deep dive into investment readiness and the legal compliance requirements that businesses need to put in place before they seriously pursue capital or growth.
The conversations went beyond general frameworks. The things that resonated most with the room: customers pay for urgency, not potential; solve the painkiller problem, not the vitamin. Markets aren't built from desks: founders who stay close to customers move faster. And scale follows a sequence: local first, then national, then regional, then global.
One system, one market at a time.
What stood out most was the shift in questions from the participants — from "how do I manage my team?" to "how do I reach the market?" From optimising inside the business to understanding where growth actually sits. That shift is where investment readiness and export readiness begin.
