THE HEAT IS ON: Westinghouse Electric Company just reached a key milestone for its eVinci microreactor. The advanced reactor prototype completed criticality testing earlier this month, reaching core temperatures upwards of 1,000°C as the company gathered valuable data on its performance.

The transportable, heat-pipe-cooled reactor design runs on TRISO fuel and is designed to produce 5 megawatts of electricity on sites as small as two acres of land, providing resilient 24/7 energy for 8+ years without refueling.

Criticality testing was conducted at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC), a National Nuclear Security Administration facility at the Nevada National Security Site. Partners on the project included Los Alamos National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory and the DOE/NRC Collaboration for Criticality Safety Support for Commercial-Scale HALEU Fuel Cycles and Transportation.

Data gathered from these experiments will help Westinghouse refine its design and increase certainty around the cost, manufacturability and schedule for eVinci, which was selected in August 2026 for the next phase of the Janus Program — the U.S. Department of the Army’s next-generation nuclear power initiative to power U.S. military installations with microreactors.

The Golden Age of Nuclear is Here ✨

This week, Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Ted Garrish testified in front of House Energy & Commerce, speaking on the U.S. Department of Energy's Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses.

The goal? Modernizing the country’s full nuclear fuel cycle.

Selected states will oversee the full nuclear supply chain including conversion, enrichment, deconversion, fuel fabrication, recycling, storage, and disposition.

By taking a coordinated approach to recycling, storage, and disposal, DOE plans to establish lasting solutions for managing waste that prioritize safety, security, and fiscal responsibility.

BEAT THE HEAT 🔥: Passive safety systems remove heat from a nuclear reactor using basic physics — no human intervention, electrical power, or cooling pumps required.

For the past 14 years, researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have been studying passive safety technologies to make advanced reactor designs safer, cheaper, and faster to test and build.

That research project is now complete, yielding one of the most comprehensive data sets to date on these next-generation safety systems.

The team tackled an exhaustive list of experiments at Argonne’s Natural Convection Shutdown Heat Removal Test Facility (NSTF), gathering mountains of data about the performance of air- and water-based passive safety technologies under a wide range of conditions.

Findings from the NSTF will be used to validate computer models and increase confidence in the safety calculations for our newest reactor concepts.

NUCLEAR 101: Gas-cooled reactors operate at very high temperatures (750° Celsius) that can be used to provide electricity or support non-electric applications such as water desalination, hydrogen production and chemical processing.

The high temperature output improves efficiency and online refueling allows for high availability. These reactors can be scaled to be modular and small with 75-megawatt electric output, or as large as current light-water reactors.
