This week has been tough to process, but it's never been more clear that elections matter. This year, in Virginia and in New Jersey, we have the opportunity to set the tone following last year's elections and ahead of next year's midterms, to vote for progressive candidates statewide and down the ballot, and to send a message -- that we won't go back.

Job Announcement: 2017 Joe Montano Fellow for Virginia State Campaigns

Joe Montano (1968-2016) was a prominent activist for Asian American causes, grassroots campaign organizer, close aide to Senator Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) and was Senator Kaine’s Northern Virginia representative. The Asian American Action Fund (AAA-Fund) and Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia (DAAV) join together to sponsor the Joe Montano Campaign Fellowship Program in his memory.

We are looking for a passionate, hardworking individual who is committed to helping elect Virginia Democrats this year in some of the most hotly contested races in the country.

Role Overview:

The Joe Montano Fellow will be responsible for various tasks focused on community engagement and capacity building as an organizer. Candidates with experience building coalitions among diverse groups of people and holding volunteers accountable are preferred. The organizer reports directly to a Regional Organizing Director for the Virginia State Campaigns in Northern Virginia.

Tasks and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

--Recruit, train and manage volunteers and expand the volunteer network
--Plan, manage, and participate in phone banks and canvasses door to door
--Amplify message and create online communities
--Asian American outreach
Required Skills and Background:
--Exceptionally well organized with the ability to meet strict deadlines
--Excellent written and verbal communication skills
--Disciplined and solution-oriented approach to all tasks
--Must have access to a vehicle and a cellphone
--Previous campaign experience preferred
--Candidates with proficiency in Korean, Vietnamese, or Mandarin are encouraged

Monica Thammarath is currently senior liaison in the Community Advocacy & Partnership Engagement (CAPE) Department at the National Education Association (NEA). At NEA, Ms. Thammarath works to connect NEA’s 3 million members to student, parent, and community organizing opportunities focused on racial and social justice, particularly as it impacts the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. Ms. Thammarath also serves as NEA’s appointee to the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) and serves as APALA’s National 1st Vice President and co-chairs the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) Education Committee. Prior to joining the NEA, Ms. Thammarath was the Education Policy Advocate at the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC), where she oversaw SEARAC’s Education Program and assisted community-based organizations across the country in connecting their direct service work to policy and advocacy. Prior to moving to Washington, DC, Ms. Thammarath organized campaigns around affordable, high quality public education and provided direct services to low-income, immigrant, and refugee communities.

Our first speaker highlight focuses on Shu-Yen Wei!
Shu-Yen is currently managing Hala Ayala's campaign for the 51st District of the Virginia House of Delegates. She has worked on electoral campaigns large and small throughout the country. She was formerly the northeast regional communications director for the Democratic National Committee in the 2016 election cycle. Prior to that, she managed a state assembly campaign in New Jersey. Her experience includes serving as a staffer at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and in the U.S. Senate, as well as a variety of press and outreach positions on local and statewide campaigns in Louisiana, Maryland and Massachusetts.

Angela Peoples is an organizer, activist, advocate working toward the liberation of all black people. A graduate of Western Michigan University, where she studied Political Science and Africana Studies, Angela got her start as a progressive advocate. In 2006, Angela fought to stop an anti-affirmative action ballot initiative and continued on building student power and fighting for college access and affordability with the United States Students Association. Angela also spent the last three years working to improve consumer protection laws for student loan borrowers and young consumers at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Angela currently serves as Director of GetEQUAL, a national grassroots network of LGBTQ people and allies fighting for LGBTQ liberation.
