The one, the only, the classic AND iconic: Magnolia grandiflora, or more familiarly called the southern Magnolia. This southern staple is inescapable in the landscapes of the southern United States, and can also be found in home gardens up and down the east and west coasts. The scientific name is justified, because just LOOK at those stunningly massive blooms. Oh, did you get a whiff? They smell good too! But the southern Magnolia has way more to offer than showy flowers. This tree is large and regal with two-toned glossy leaves, which, did we forget to mention is evergreen? This tree has so much to offer ornamentally, ecologically (wildlife love those ruby colored seeds), medicinally for indigenous groups, and functionally in wood products. Keep in mind, this tree will routinely drop those big leaves and cone-like fruits for those who like tidier plants.

As an Arborist, you’ll:
• Monitor and maintain tree health across Smithsonian museum grounds
• Perform pruning, removals, and risk assessments using industry best practices
• Support tree planting, soil care, and integrated pest management
• Collaborate with horticulturists, landscape architects, and museum staff to ensure safety and sustainability
What You Bring:
• Experience in arboriculture, urban forestry, or tree care
• Knowledge of tree biology, diagnostics, and climbing or aerial lift techniques
• ISA Certification (or ability to obtain) preferred
• A passion for public landscapes and environmental stewardship

Our Mary Livingston Ripley Garden is a quiet oasis nestled in the heart of the National Mall. This garden was the inspiration of Mrs. S. Dillon Ripley, lifelong plant scholar-collector, gardener, and wife of the Smithsonian Institution’s eighth Secretary. Thanks to her efforts, this garden has become a hidden gem, beloved by those that visit and waiting to be discovered by someone new everyday. The garden features a unique curvilinear design with a diverse and unique array of perennials, shrubs, trees, and seasonal annuals. Be sure to take a moment to enjoy the garden next time you visit!
