Yesterday we held a public hearing to address higher electric costs in the District. We brought together regional energy grid operators, consumer advocates, and clean energy experts to define the problem and find solutions. What’s clear is that surging grid demand and retiring power plants are driving up the supply costs on your bill.

While those regional grid costs are out of our hands, we strictly control local delivery charges. We’ll use insights from yesterday hearing to find ways to lock in more stable energy prices, expand local battery storage, and fight for long-term affordability.

Any increase in monthly expenses is frustrating, and utility costs are a real concern for the District. Rising energy demand and power plant retirements in our area have forced Pepco to pay a higher price at auction for the electricity it supplies to most customers. Starting June 1, an average residential customer will see a total bill increase of 6.2%, or about $8.79 per month.
