Two stories unfolded this month that tell you everything about where American democracy stands.

In Indiana, a group of Republican legislators refused to go along with a Trump-backed mid-decade gerrymander. The pressure was enormous. The political consequences were clear. They voted no anyway. Then five of the seven lost their primaries.

When asked if he had any regrets, state Sen. Jim Buck said simply: « My district told me overwhelmingly to vote no, and that’s what I did. »

A thousand miles away, Colorado Governor Jared Polis spent months resisting Trump’s demands to release Tina Peters—a former election official convicted of breaching secure election equipment to advance 2020 conspiracy theories. Trump called him a « scumbag » and a « sleazebag. » His administration threatened to defund Colorado’s federal funding, disaster relief, and research programs.

Last week, Polis caved—announcing Peters would be released.

Two cases of intimidation. Two very different choices. One lesson.

Yesterday, Speaker Johnson canceled a vote to stop Trump’s war with Iran — because Congress finally had the votes to pull this off.

This isn’t a right or left issue — it’s about right or wrong.

Because here are the facts: Trump started this war nearly 3 months ago. The Constitution’s clear: only Congress declares war. Not the President. Any president.

Congress is home next week for Memorial Day recess, and they’ll vote again when they return to DC in June. The Senate will vote, too. In the meantime, each day at war costs us hundreds of millions of dollars — from the federal budget and at the gas pump.

Whether you’re Republican or Democrat, call Congress when they’re home next week. Tell them it’s time to restore checks and balances, to rein in executive overreach, and to end this conflict now.

The DOJ settlement that created Trump’s $1.8B slush fund didn’t just spend your tax dollars — it permanently signed away the government’s right to ever investigate, audit, or sue Trump, his companies, his family, or his associates.

It waives ongoing IRS audits. It surrenders back taxes owed. It forfeits every legal claim the United States has against this president.

Legal experts are calling it the greatest abuse of the legal system in American history.

Day 73 of an unauthorized war.

No declaration. No congressional approval. No clear mission. Americans are paying for it at the pump, at the grocery store, and in the lives of our service members — and Congress still hasn't done its job.

The War Powers Resolution exists for exactly this moment (and yes Secretary Rubio, it’s perfectly constitutional).

America’s elections were built to be resilient. But something has shifted. For decades, the executive branch helped strengthen that system — enforcing voting rights, securing infrastructure, providing resources. Not anymore.

In Trump’s second term, the executive branch has become the primary threat to the very elections it’s supposed to support — deploying authoritarian tactics to tilt the playing field before a single vote is cast.

Our election’s immune system is being tested in a new way. And the election is six months away.
