The Freedman's Bank The Freedman’s Bank, established on March 3, 1865, by President Lincoln, was created to teach freed slaves about money.

WASHINGTON -- The Treasury Department announced Tuesday that it is renaming a prominent federal building after a bank that concentrated on the economic development of newly freed slaves in the post-Civil War era. During a ceremony on Jan. 7, the Treasury Department will rename the Treasury Annex -- which is located just across Pennsylvania Avenue from the main structure -- to the Freedman's Bank B

uilding. The Annex currently stands on the site of the original Freedman's Bank, which the government created to help newly freed slaves and African-American soldiers integrate into the nation's economy at the end of the Civil War.

“Naming the Freedman’s Bank Building recognizes an institution that symbolized a new future for African-Americans,” Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a press release. “The legacy of Freedman’s Bank also serves as a reminder that we must continue striving for greater financial inclusion for all Americans -- particularly those in underserved and minority communities -- so that they can share in the benefits of our growing economy.”

John Hope Bryant, the CEO of Operation HOPE, a nonprofit social investment banking organization, advocated for the Treasury Department to make the change.

Frederick Douglass, a former slave and eminent human rights leader in the abolition movement, was the first black citizen to hold a high U.S. government rank. He became one of the most famous intellectuals of his time, advising presidents and lecturing to thousands.

Proudly standing in front of the , across from and in DC. Created in 1865 by President , The was chartered to ‘teach freed slaves about money.’ Unfortunately, Lincoln was killed the next month. This was lost to history until formally requested to change the name of the original Headquarters of the in January of last year. And it was CHANGED! From the to the . And I am honored to be the only non-US President to inspire the changing of a building name on the .
Operation HOPE is now moving on finishing what Lincoln and began — having opened our 100th+ location. Ira time for a change. It’s time for our . Get
