At roughly 1800hrs, Engine Co. 43 responded to the 5200 block of Indian Head Highway for a vehicle on fire to the rear of the laundromat. Engine Co. 43 arrived to find fire throughout and extinguished the same. The company operated for 25 minutes and returned to The Lab.

Navy Yard Engine 42 dispatched for vehicle accident at the O St gate at the Washington Navy Yard. Engine 42 arrived to find single vehicle accident with one subject trapped, bringing Battalion 41 establishing command and Engine Co. 43 for the complement of extrication equipment. Engine 43 arrived with DCFD Rescue Squad 3 and began vehicle stabilization and extricating the single patient, gaining access by removing 2 doors on the passenger side. Patient was handed off to a DCFD medic unit, and Engines 42, 43, and Battalion 41 returned to service.

Engine Company 43 responded to the National Harbor for multiple vehicles on fire in a parking garage, communications filled out the box alarm and switched over to 8C3, bringing more units from Fairfax and Alexandria. 42 Engine stretched and found one vehicle well off, and 43 Engine stretched from a separate standpipe system and found and extinguished another vehicle well off. Engine Company 43 operated with 42 Engine, 21 Truck, and Squad 47 for approximately an hour and a half before returning to “The Lab”.

Engine Company 43 was alerted to respond to 5542 Livingston Terrace for the apartment on fire as the 3rd due wagon. First arriving PGFD units found a 2 in the front 3 in the rear garden style apartment with fire showing from the top floor and a corrected address of 5628 Livingston Terrace. Engine Company 43 arrived as dispatched and split laid for incoming units to complete secondary water supply from a different hydrant outside of the complex. The crew stretched the 400 to the rear to find fire showing from the top floor balcony and spreading into the attic. Engine Company 43 took their line over a ladder to the 3rd floor balcony of the unit next to the apartment and began knocking fire in the shared attic space. Engine company 43 operated for approximately 2.5 hours before returning to “the lab”.

This morning the crew from Washington Navy Yard Engine 42 and Naval Research Lab Engine 43 had a very unique opportunity to assist the Explosive Ordinance Division from Dahlgren NSWC with the removal or a 1600lb Projectile from a old railway gun car.

This was a great opportunity to work technical skills with an outside entity as well as sharing and learning new skills and techniques! It was a pleasure to assist EOD, call us anytime!

Congratulations are in order for Fireman Milstead on passing his turnover tests this morning for Driver/Operator on the engine companies. Fireman Milstead worked tirelessly with the officers and fireman of the central battalion for the last few months studying and practicing for today. Fireman Milstead was put to the test with whiteboard scenarios as well as supply/attack pumper hands-on scenarios that he passed with ease, and is now on his 2 weeks as dedicated driver for the engine company to bring it all together and solidify todays tests results! Congrats from all of us here at Co 3.

It is with terrible sadness, loss and grief that the IAFF National Capital Firefighters Local F-121 has to make the unfortunate announcement that it has lost one of our Brother Firefighters from Naval Air Station Patuxent River in a 2 alarm working house fire on Deer Wood Park Drive in Leonardtown, Maryland. Currently, an investigation into the cause is ongoing. A procession is currently escorting our brother to Baltimore. At this time, the name of our brother is being withheld pending the proper notifications and releases through the Naval District Washington Fire Department. For further comments please contact the PIO within the Naval District Washington Fire Department and expect further official updates from the Department and ourselves as we try to move forward. We please ask that you keep our Local, NDWFD, the families and friends affected by our loss as we attempt to move forward.
