Minister of the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. Attends the Opening Ceremony of the 41st Annual General Meeting of the Dhammayut Order in the United States at Wat Tummaprateip, Washington, D.C.

On 9 May 2026, Mr. Jak Sangchai, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM), represented the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C., at the Opening Ceremony of the 41st Annual General Meeting of the Dhammayut Order in the United States, at Wat Tummaprateip, Washington, D.C.

The opening remarks were delivered virtually by Somdet Phra Maha Wirawong, member of the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand and Secretary-General of the Dhammayut Order. Phra Dhamma Vajirapamokkha, Advisor to the Office of Supervision of Dhammayut Order Abroad and Assistant Secretary-General of the Dhammayut Order, presided over the Meeting, with the attendance of more than 100 monks of the Dhammayut Order from all over the United States as well as Thailand.

On this occasion, the Minister and DCM delivered welcoming remarks emphasizing the close cooperation between the Royal Thai Embassy, the three Royal Thai Consulates-General, and all Thai temples in the United States. He highlighted the important role of Thai temples as spiritual centers for Buddhist communities and in supporting the strengthening of Thai communities abroad. He also expressed appreciation to the temples for continued cooperation with the Royal Thai Embassy and the Royal Thai Consulates-General for the provision of mobile consular services to Thai nationals residing in the United States over the years.

เมื่อวันที่ ๑๐ พฤษภาคม ๒๕๖๙ ดร. สุริยา จินดาวงษ์ เอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงวอชิงตัน ได้เป็นประธานในพิธีผูกพัทธสีมาและฝังลูกนิมิต อุโบสถ ญสส. ๑๐๐ ปี ณ วัดธรรมประทีป วอชิงตัน ดี.ซี. โดยมีพุทธศาสนิกชนเข้าร่วมเป็นจำนวนมาก

Ambassador to Washington, D.C. Presides over the Consecration Ceremony and Boundary Stone Burial for the Somdej Phra Nyanasamvara Centennial Hall at Wat Tummaprateip, Washington, D.C.

On 10 May 2026, Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Ambassador of Thailand to the United States, presided over the consecration ceremony and the burial of sacred boundary stones (luk nimit) for the Somdej Phra Nyanasamvara Centennial Hall at Wat Tummaprateip, Washington, D.C. The ceremony was attended by a large number of Buddhist devotees.

Construction of the Somdej Phra Nyanasamvara Centennial Hall began on 6 September 2015, supported by the faith and devotion of the Buddhist community, with Mrs. Sayomporn Srivara serving as the principal benefactor. Over the years, the Hall has been used for important Buddhist religious ceremonies, meditation practice for the Thai community and activities marking auspicious occasions of the Thai monarchy organized by the Royal Thai Embassy, Washington, D.C.

The consecration of the sacred boundary (phatthasima) and the burial of the boundary stones (luk nimit) are considered significant Buddhist ceremonies that signify the formal establishment of the ordination hall’s sacred boundary for conducting monastic acts in accordance with the Buddhist monastic code. The “phatthasima” refers to the sacred boundary properly designated according to monastic discipline for conducting ordination ceremonies and other acts of the Sangha while the “luk nimit” symbolize the stability and enduring presence of Buddhism.

On 22 May 2026, Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Ambassador of Thailand to the United States, presided over the Buddhist prayer ceremony and the offering of luncheon to monks in honour of Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni, Queen Consort of King Prajadhipok (King Rama VII), for the recognition by the UNESCO of the centenary of Her Majesty’s royal duties and contributions. The ceremony was held at Wat Yarnna Rangsee in Sterling, Virginia, and was attended by heads of Team Thailand offices, Embassy’s officials and spouses.

Thailand touts Zero Dropout Policy at UN conference

In Thailand, every young person matters. That commitment to students at risk of dropping out has earned the country an invitation to present its model for inclusive education at a United Nations meeting in Paris marking the launch of the 2026 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report.

The report, entitled “Access and equity: Countdown to 2030,” estimates that more than 273 million children worldwide are not attending school. They face uncertain futures on the margins of society and represent lost potential for the countries in which they live.

“Every child has a light inside. What is missing is not their intention, but the system that allows it to shine,” said Kraiyos Patrawart, managing director of the Equitable Education Fund (EEF), who represented Thailand and the Asia-Pacific region.

“The world is now in the final stretch before 2030, but the chances of achieving quality education are quite slim, given the combined effects of COVID-19, conflicts and economic slowdown,” Kraiyos added.

The year 2030 is the deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Quality education is SDG 4, but education is also the foundation for realizing many of
the 17 SDGs.

Kraiyos said Thailand has shifted from a reactive to proactive approach in its efforts to keep children in school and help dropouts return to learning. Educators are adopting early interventions and working to make learning more accessible.

According to Kraiyos, Thailand’s “Zero Dropout Plus” model has drawn attention for integrating real-time data, decentralized actions and multisector collaboration. “From real data to flexible learning, Thailand shows that solutions must be rooted in understanding each child,” he said.

The “Plus” component reflects a preventive approach. Thai education officials say most dropout cases can be avoided, prompting a shift toward stopping children from leaving school in the first place.

The model introduces case managers and personalized care plans to address individual barriers, linking resources from multiple agencies to deliver targeted support. Kraiyos said that since the Zero Dropout Plus model was launched two years ago, about 300,000 children returned to education - roughly 20 to 30 percent of those who had left the school system - representing significant progress.

Travel website dubs Thailand a rising wellness hub in Asia

Visit. Relax. Heal. With its harmonious blend of ancient therapies and modern rejuvenation, Thailand is emerging as a wellness capital in Asia, and its reputation is spreading beyond the continent, according to a leading travel website.

“Thailand is set to become a leading wellness hub in the region,” wrote Travel and Tour World (TTW). “With wellness tourism becoming a global trend, Thailand’s Tourism Authority is dedicated to positioning the country as Asia’s leading wellness hub.”

Thai massage has become well known worldwide for its therapeutic and soothing qualities. But wellness in Thailand extends far beyond massage.

TTW noted that the Kingdom offered a unique combination of traditional therapies and modern wellness practices. In promoting these, Thailand is appealing to both international tourists and local residents willing to invest in their health and well-being.

The article emphasized that true wellness went beyond visiting a luxury spa. It is a holistic experience, and Thailand offers a wide range of options to support that approach.

“From Buddhist temples to purpose-built meditation centers, travelers have a wide range of options to choose from. With its serene landscapes and tranquil atmosphere, Thailand provides the perfect backdrop for visitors seeking peace of mind,” TTW wrote.

“Hot springs in the northern regions provide natural therapeutic baths known for their healing properties while health resorts along Thailand’s coastline offer beachfront wellness escape where visitors can enjoy yoga, spa treatments and healthy cuisine,” TTW added.

Known as “the Kitchen of the World” for its distinctive and flavorful cuisine, the Kingdom’s agriculture and food industries also contribute to wellness tourism.

“Thailand’s organic farms also play a significant role in the wellness tourism sector. Many travelers are now seeking out sustainable farming practices. These farms often offer tours, cooking classes and farm-to-table dining experiences, allowing visitors to connect with nature while supporting sustainability,” TTW wrote.

Smooth as silk—and silicon: Thailand to debut airport robots

Thailand will take service to a smarter, more advanced level when it begins deploying humanoid robots at its main airport in Bangkok later this year to assist passengers with pre-boarding processes and support security operations.

Metthier, a subsidiary of the listed company SKY ICT, is set to deploy three humanoid robots at Suvarnabhumi Airport by the end of 2026. The company believes the trio, based on expected performance, will serve as ambassadors for the new technology, paving the way for a larger corps of robots that could eventually serve as staff at major airports across
the Kingdom.

The first three will have their metallic hands full. Suvarnabhumi is projected to handle 67.7 million passengers this year, with airport authorities aiming to accommodate 120 million once the airport’s expansion is completed in 2030.

The initiative brings together two areas in which Thailand excels: tourism and digital industries.

The Kingdom has long been a tourism success story, and Bangkok has been named
the world’s most visited city several times over the past decade by Mastercard and other tracking firms. As a result, its airports are often operating at or beyond capacity.

In recent years, Thailand has also emerged as a regional hub for digital industries, such as data centers, artificial intelligence and robotics. The government has made investment in these sectors a national priority, offering generous incentives and privileges to firms operating in these fields. The strategy is beginning to pay off.

To produce the robots, Metthier will form a joint venture with Shanghai-based Agibot, a leading robotics company specializing in embodied intelligence, and Thai-listed IT product distributor COM7.

As tariff controversy fades, Moody’s raises Thailand’s rating

Thailand is in good shape. The Kingdom has successfully navigated the stormy environment sparked by new tariff and trade policies, prompting Moody’s Ratings to raise its outlook to stable from negative while crediting what it sees as a new period of political stability.

Moody’s upgraded the outlook for the Government of Thailand to stable from negative while affirming the foreign- and local-currency issuer ratings and the local-currency senior unsecured credit rating at Baa1.

The global credit rating agency said that political stability and policy continuity were major factors in its decision. In national elections in February, voters returned Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to power for the second term.

Moody’s said its assessment reflected its view that downside risks from tariffs enacted by the administration of President Donald Trump had diminished. Following a reduction in American tariffs on Thai exports to levels in line with regional peers, the agency does not expect Thailand to suffer a severe or persistent shock.

Exports are the main driver of Thailand’s economy. Higher tariffs could make Thai products and services more expensive in the American market, reducing the Kingdom’s competitiveness and putting its economic growth at risk. This prompted Moody’s to downgrade Thailand’s outlook to negative when the levies were first announced.

However, because the tariff rate imposed on Thailand is the same as or similar to that of its competitors, the Kingdom is essentially on a level playing field with its rivals.

Moody’s said this also held true regarding another economic concern facing the Kingdom: rising and volatile oil prices resulting from the conflict in the Middle East.

“While we expect higher oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict to weigh on Thailand’s growth and increase the government debt burden, the country’s exposure to these risks is broadly comparable to that of similarly rated peers,” Moody’s said.

Ambassador of Thailand to the United States visits Atlanta to promote multi-dimensional cooperation

On 6–8 May 2026, H.E. Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Ambassador of Thailand to the United States, visited Atlanta, Georgia, to promote economic, technological, educational and people-to-people cooperation between Thailand and the United States.

On 7 May 2026, the Ambassador presided over the Thai SELECT Day – Atlanta’s New Gateway for Authentic Thai Cuisine, hosted by the Thai Trade Center - Miami at Bangkok Station Restaurant, during which he presented the Thai SELECT Award Certificates to 14 Thai restaurants and Certificates of Appreciation to Singha Beer and Eastland Food for supporting Thailand’s food and beverage industry. He also joined in a live Thai cooking demonstration to promote Thai culture through cuisine.

During the visit, the Ambassador also met with Mr. Bernard Kippelen, Vice Provost for International Initiatives, Georgia Institute of Technology, to discuss cooperation in academic exchanges, online learning, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and lifelong learning, with a view of reskilling and upskilling workers and enhancing students’ capabilities in STEM. He further met and exchanged views on experiences and perspectives on student life with Thai students and alumni in Atlanta.

On 8 May 2026, the Ambassador met with Mr. Andre Dickens, Mayor of Atlanta, to discuss expanding investment and cooperation between Thailand and Atlanta, particularly in the areas of education, business and people-to-people ties. The Ambassador highlighted that Atlanta is home to three major Thai companies, namely the PTT Global Chemical, Indorama Ventures and Thai Union Group, thereby contributing to the economic benefits of both Thailand and

Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. Hosts Passport DC: Around the World Embassy Tour 2026

On 2 May 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy, in collaboration with Events DC, hosted the Passport DC: Around the World Embassy Tour 2026 at the Embassy. The event welcomed more than 3,000 visitors, offering them an opportunity to experience Thailand’s unique identity through cultural performances, tourism promotion, Thai cuisine and traditional wisdom.

On this occasion, Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Ambassador of Thailand to the US, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered welcoming remarks, highlighting the 193-year friendship between Thailand and the US. The Ambassador also emphasized Thailand’s participation in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the US through people-to-people and cultural exchanges.

The event was honored by the presence of H.E. Dr. Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, Chairman of the Advisory Board to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, during his visit to the US, and Ms. Kimberly Bassett, Secretary of State of District of Columbia.

Program highlights included traditional Thai dances and contemporary performances, Muay Thai demonstration and the Wai Kru ceremony, authentic Thai massage sessions, tourism exhibition, an interactive digital Thai costume experience, fruit carving demonstration, coconut-themed educational activities, Songkran activities for children and families, as well as Thai food and dessert booths by local Thai businesses, all of which received enthusiastic interest from visitors.

The Embassy also organized the Music in the Garden at the Grace Episcopal Church, located across the street from the Embassy, featuring live music and outdoor activities that further promoted friendship and cultural exchange throughout the afternoon.

ในโอกาสนี้ ดร. สุริยา จินดาวงษ์ เอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงวอชิงตัน ได้เป็นประธานเปิดงานและกล่าวต้อนรับผู้เข้าร่วม โดยย้ำถึงมิตรภาพอันยาวนานระหว่างไทยกับสหรัฐฯ ที่ดำเนินมากว่า ๑๙๓ ปี พร้อมเชิญชวนให้ผู้เข้าร่วมงานได้ชื่นชมความเป็นไทยผ่านวัฒนธรรม อาหาร ดนตรี ศิลปะ และประสบการณ์ต่าง ๆ ที่สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ ตั้งใจนำมาถ่ายทอดในปีนี้ รวมทั้งการร่วมเฉลิมฉลองวาระ ๒๕๐ ปีของสหรัฐอเมริกา ผ่านการแลกเปลี่ยนทางวัฒนธรรมระหว่างประชาชนของทั้งสองประเทศ

ทั้งนี้ ได้รับเกียรติจาก ดร. ปานปรีย์ พหิทธานุกร ประธานคณะที่ปรึกษาของรองนายกรัฐมนตรีและรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ ในโอกาสเดินทางเยือนสหรัฐอเมริกา และ น.ส. Kimberly Bassett, Secretary of State of District of Columbia เข้าเยี่ยมชมกิจกรรมครั้งนี้ด้วย

กิจกรรมที่สำคัญประกอบด้วยการแสดงนาฏศิลป์ไทยและการแสดงร่วมสมัย การสาธิตมวยไทยและพิธีไหว้ครูมวยไทย การนวดไทยโดยผู้เชี่ยวชาญ การประชาสัมพันธ์การท่องเที่ยวและกิจกรรมสำคัญของประเทศไทย กิจกรรมทดลองสวมใส่ชุดไทยในรูปแบบดิจิทัลเชิงปฏิสัมพันธ์ การสาธิตแกะสลักผลไม้ กิจกรรมส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับมะพร้าวและผลิตภัณฑ์จากมะพร้าว และกิจกรรมสงกรานต์สำหรับเด็กและครอบครัว ตลอดจนการออกร้านอาหารและขนมไทยจากผู้ประกอบการไทยในพื้นที่ ซึ่งได้รับความสนใจจากผู้เข้าร่วมงานอย่างมาก

นอกจากนี้ สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ ยังได้จัดกิจกรรม Music in the Garden ณ Grace Episcopal Church ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ฝั่งตรงข้ามสถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ โดยจัดให้มีการแสดงดนตรีสดและกิจกรรมกลางแจ้งเพื่อสร้างบรรยากาศแห่งมิตรภาพและการแลกเปลี่ยนทางวัฒนธรรมตลอดช่วงบ่ายของวัน

สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ ขอขอบคุณหน่วยงานทีมประเทศไทยประจำกรุงวอชิงตัน การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย สำนักงานนิวยอร์ก สมาคมนวดและสปาไทยแห่งสหรัฐอเมริกา สมาคมร้านอาหารไทยในสหรัฐอเมริกา (TRAA) ผู้ประกอบการไทย ศิลปิน นักแสดง อาสาสมัคร เยาวชนไทยและผู้มีส่วนร่วมทุกภาคส่วนที่ร่วมกันทำให้กิจกรรมครั้งนี้ประสบความสำเร็จด้วยดี
