National Assembly of State Arts Agencies: NASAA

National Assembly of State Arts Agencies: NASAA NASAA is the nonpartisan membership organization that unites, represents and serves the nation's state and jurisdictional arts agencies.

NASAA's mission is to strengthen state arts agencies. The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization serving the nation's 56 state and jurisdictional arts councils. Arts and creativity strengthen America. They help people and places to thrive by growing our economy, fortifying our well-being, driving educational success and connecting us to each other. State arts agencies ensure that all communitiesโ€”including rural regions and economically distressed areasโ€”have access to these positive impacts of the arts. NASAA, in turn, strengthens state arts agencies, equipping them with tools they use to serve the public. We serve as a data clearinghouse and conduct research about public funding for the arts as well as the policies and programs of state arts agencies.

The federal-state partnership matters. As Congress continues work on FY2027 appropriations, the National Endowment for the Arts remains an important part of a federal-state partnership that brings arts funding to communities across the country.

A new continuing resolution extends federal funding through December 11. It also temporarily prevents proposed changes to governmentwide grant rules that would give senior political appointees a greater role in reviewing discretionary federal grants.

There is more work ahead. While the measure provides temporary stability, it does not resolve the larger FY2027 funding debate. Visit NASAAโ€™s federal and legislative updates for the latest information and advocacy resources. https://bit.ly/4xMv35X

Arts service organizations (A*Os) are essential connective tissue within the arts ecosystem and understanding their work helps strengthen the entire field.

NASAA is supporting the 2026 National A*O Survey and encourages state and jurisdictional arts agencies and other arts organizations to help spread the word. If A*Os are part of your network, encourage them to participate!

Earlier this year, E.A. Michelson Philanthropy released an engaging and entertaining video featuring Ted Danson, who brings warmth and humor to evidence-backed insights about creativity and aging well.

The video complements a recent report from NASAA and the National Endowment for the Arts highlighting the important role of the arts in supporting health and well-being as we age.

Thank you to E.A. Michelson Philanthropy for funding this important research and helping elevate the conversation about the vital role of creativity and the arts in aging well.

Watch the video for Dansonโ€™s take on why staying creative, curious and connected may be one of the best ways to age well. https://bit.ly/4gqOThf

Congress has recessed for August, which means your elected officials are back in their home states and districts meeting with constituents and visiting communities.

That makes the coming weeks a valuable opportunity to advocate for the arts.

Reach out to your senators and representatives. Share the impact of the arts in your community, highlight the work happening in your state, and explain why continued federal support for the NEA matters.

Better yet, invite your elected officials or their staff to experience the arts firsthand at a performance, exhibition or other local event.

New research from SMU DataArts highlights the role of public investment in shaping arts sector outcomes. The findings strengthen the case for public funding as an investment in public value โ€” not simply a subsidy โ€” with cities that sustained or grew local arts investment showing stronger sector outcomes.

The message is clear: cities that sustain investment, adapt to changing conditions and actively support a diverse mix of organizations are demonstrating that stronger, more resilient cultural ecosystems are achievable.
