🇺🇸🇪🇸📚 This event features the presentation of a special issue of Revista de Occidente marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and exploring the evolution of the relationship between Spain and the United States, as well as the challenges the two countries share today. The July–August 2026 issue brings together Spanish, American, and European scholars and commentators to examine U.S. political evolution, its international role, democratic and social challenges, and its long-standing relationship with Spain. This special conversation brings together three leading Spanish voices to reflect on the relationship from historical, political, economic, diplomatic, and cultural perspectives:

🎙️ Fernando Vallespín, Director of Revista de Occidente and Professor of Political Science at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

🎙️ Federico Steinberg, Prince of Asturias Distinguished Visiting Professor at Georgetown University and Senior Fellow at the Elcano Royal Institute.

🇪🇸 🇺🇸 Renowned historian Larrie Ferreiro will examine Spain’s crucial support for American independence and the military leadership of Bernardo de Gálvez, who led campaigns against British forces from Spanish Louisiana during the Revolutionary War. Ferreiro’s presentation will be complemented by Robyn Asleson, curator at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, who will discuss a remarkable 1781 portrait of Gálvez by Cuban artist José Nicolás de Escalera. The portrait, on loan from the Iberdrola Collection, is currently featured in the National Portrait Gallery exhibition Out of Many: Portraits from 1600 to 1900.

➕🎶 The evening will also feature a musical performance and a light reception. Join us for an evening exploring the enduring ties between Spain and the United States and Spain’s significant contribution to the struggle for American independence.

🤝 This event is part of The Enduring Power of International Exchange, a Smithsonian Associates series presented in partnership with the Smithsonian’s Office of Global Affairs and participating embassies, and is part of the Smithsonian’s Our Shared Future: 250 initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the Independence of the United States.

Starting with simple geometric shapes, you’ll mix unexpected physical traits, character tropes, and personality quirks, selected at random, to create unique characters and spark your creativity! 💥

🎨✨ 10/13 | Meet Don Julio, the artist behind the illustration of Severo Ochoa in 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐬: 𝟏𝟐 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬, 𝟏𝟐 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲𝐬. Don Julio’s style blends sharp satire, irreverent humor, and expressive cartooning to make complex historical and scientific subjects accessible and entertaining.

🖌️ “When I found out I had been assigned Severo Ochoa, I thought: “Seriously? I do comedy… what on earth am I going to do that’s funny with this man?” My first attempts at getting to know him went nowhere, but the more I learned about him and came to understand him, the more he became an absolute OBSESSION. I immersed myself so deeply in his life that I eventually came to think of him as a close friend. I managed to understand (at least to a large extent) his work, the incredibly important relationship he had with his wife, the rich historical context surrounding his life, and his unconditional love for science. The humor was there, yes, but it was no longer the most important thing. My goal had become something else: to convey, even if only a small fraction, of just how fascinating and admirable Severo Ochoa was. I hope I managed to do that.”

👤 Julio A. Serrano (Don Julio) has been working for the Spanish satirical magazine El Jueves for more than fifteen years. His best-known works include the historical comic series DesHechos Históricos, the children’s series Cecilia Van Helsing, and the best-selling books Ser fascista está mal and El niño Jesús no odia a los mariquitas.

Portraits: 12 Lives, 12 Journeys pays tribute to twelve Spanish figures whose lives and careers were shaped by their connection to the United States, using comics and graphic storytelling to reflect the enduring cultural ties between the two countries.

🎭✨ A new evening of Spanish theater is coming to the Spanish Cultural Center! As part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of United States independence, Microtheater 250: Across the Atlantic presents staged readings in English of two contemporary Spanish plays exploring science, memory, exile, and the enduring cultural ties between Spain and the United States.

🧠 The Invisible Network, by Blanca Doménech and translated by Don Bogen, revisits Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s 1899 visit to Clark University, imagining how scientific inquiry and exchange can create understanding across political divides.

🎭 The Chair That Can Hold the World, by Carolina África and translated by Don Bogen, draws inspiration from Margarita Xirgu’s 1967 rehearsals of Federico García Lorca’s Yerma at Smith College, reflecting on theater, translation, exile, and cultural memory.

🗣️The staged readings will be followed by a conversation with director Luz Nicolás and performers María del Mar Rodríguez and Gabriel Alejandro Rodríguez.

➕Microtheater 250 is a special project organized by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., developed in the context of the 250th anniversary of the United States. The full three-play program—planned for November—will bring together The Invisible Network by Blanca Doménech, The Chair That Can Hold the World by Carolina África, and A Bit More Complicated by Tamara Gutiérrez, exploring science, Hispanism and exile, and immigration across the shared histories of Spain and the United States.

🇪🇸🎶Spanish countertenor Rafael Quirant arrives in the U.S. this September as a guest of our Spanish Young Music Talent Program (SYMT) and as a prizewinner of Juventudes Musicales de España ().

✨During his visit, he will perform at the Spanish Cultural Center of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, DC, and in Puerto Rico.

🎹🎶Born in Valencia, Rafael Quirant is the great-grandson of the celebrated soprano Carmen Tur Melchor. He won first prize in the 2021 Juventudes Musicales de España Singing Competition and has worked alongside renowned artists such as Juan de la Rubia, Xavier Sabata, Núria Rial, and María Espada, among others. Among his most recent engagements is his participation in the Peralada Festival, where he performed Johann Adolf Hasse’s oratorio Sanctus Petrus et Sancta Maria Magdalena, accompanied by the Vespres d’Arnadí ensemble under the direction of Dani Espasa. He has also toured performing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the ADDA Simfònica and the Orfeón Donostiarra.
