We’re proud to share that last week, Director Thomas Faust, Warden Joe Page III, and members of the DOC Operations team appeared before the National Commission on Accreditation for Corrections, and the DC Department of Corrections is officially reaccredited by the American Correctional Association.

This achievement places DOC among a small percentage of local adult detention facilities nationwide to earn and maintain ACA accreditation, which is granted on a three-year cycle.

Bennett Career Institute has expanded its reach to the DC Department of Corrections. Residents in the Correctional Treatment Facility have been participating in the inaugural cosmetology & barbering apprenticeship program launched in June 2024. This innovative program allows residents to begin barbering & cosmetology classes while in custody. Upon release, residents can then complete the required credit hours at the Ready Center to qualify for license exams. Bennett Career Institute also provides job placement assistance after licensing.

Did you catch The Washington Post’s coverage of DOC’s work to support voting access in jail, along with the Mayor's Office of Returning Citizen Affairs () efforts to register returning citizens and educate them on their voting rights?

The District has become something of a national model for efforts to register people who are incarcerated, following a 2020 law passed by the D.C. Council.

📢 Voting Rights in Action! 📢 This week, eligible DOC residents proudly exercised their right to vote in the 2024 General Election 🗳️, casting ballots for everything from President of the United States to local Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. Residents also had access to same-day registration, ensuring everyone could participate—even if they did not receive a ballot in the mail or weren’t sure of their registration status.

📖 Before heading to the polls, residents were able to review sample ballots via the DC Voter Guide on their tablets. For the third election in a row, select residents even stepped up as paid Election Workers, trained by on the electoral process, voter registration, and voting equipment!

DOC is proud to play a vital role in upholding voting rights in our facility. While many in jail are legally eligible to vote, they often face barriers due to a lack of resources or institutional support. We’re committed to breaking down those barriers and helping our residents exercise their right to vote. Thank you, , for your continued support!

Atonement—the act of taking responsibility for past wrongs through meaningful action and expressions of remorse. For the past six months, residents have been engaged in The A'Tonement Project, co-founded by Jahaur Abraham and Edward Ford. This pioneering initiative focuses on reducing violence and mentoring individuals by instilling values of character, integrity, and purpose. Congratulations to the 43 residents across four units at the DC Jail who successfully completed the Character Development Course through the program. This course emphasizes personal growth, conflict resolution, and civic responsibility, helping residents take meaningful steps toward redemption and a brighter future.

“I’m 23 years old, I was never taught how to properly plan for the future financially, I always just planned for tomorrow. This program taught me how to plan for ten years ahead and be intentional with my money.” These honest words from a resident on our Young Men Emerging Unit highlight the real impact of the seven-week financial literacy course led by our partner . This course equips residents with practical financial skills and knowledge, empowering them to take control of their finances and build a more stable, secure future.

The DC Department of Corrections is proud to team up with D.C. United and the Twinning Project to bring an innovative soccer program to our facilities. ⚽

This partnership marks a milestone, offering residents at DC Jail the chance to participate in soccer-based training sessions aimed at building teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience, key skills that will aid in their reentry to society. We are deeply grateful to D.C. United for their partnership and to the Twinning Project for their international leadership in using sports as a tool for positive change.

This first cohort at the DC Jail is being coached by Glenn Goodwine and Justin Reed, and we're excited to see more groups from both the DC Jail and Correctional Treatment Facility, join in future sessions. We would also like to thank Shanell Mosley, Senior Director of Community Relations and Executive Director of the D.C. United Foundation, and Twinning Project founder Hilton Freund for making this groundbreaking collaboration possible.

Our Co-Ed Painting & Plumbing Pre-Apprenticeship Program, launched this summer and led by provides participants with over 60 hours of classroom and hands-on training, offering the opportunity to become OSHA certified and pursue meaningful careers upon release. We’re proud of the hard work our Education, Case Management, and Re-Entry Program Division is doing to expand and scale programs like this for our residents.

Special thanks to DOC Deputy Director Jacqueline Williams for her leadership and to US Magistrate Judge Zia M. Faruqui and Senior US District Judge Thomas Hogan for taking the time to see the impact of this important initiative firsthand.

Our Deputy Director for Education, Reentry Programs, and Case Management, Jacqueline Williams, alongside Tony Johnson, CEO of Captivate Perspectives, shared insights on reducing recidivism through the DC READY Center.

Danjuma Gaskins, our IGP Program Manager and Elections/Voting Coordinator, with Myra Woods from the DC League of Women Voters, highlighted the crucial role of jails in ensuring voting rights for all.
