Who benefited most from the adoption of new technology & e-commerce tools in the 2010s: small, medium-sized, or large retailers?

Surprising findings from a new CCIA Research Center & Rob Kulick of NERA study show that not only did retail small & medium-sized businesses (SMBs) see an associated explosion in growth after adopting e-commerce and omnichannel tools in the 2010s, but that their new e-commerce capabilities benefitted them more than the same tools did larger retailers. The correlation is clear: digital technology was a rising tide that lifted all ships in the 2010s, but retail SMBs owe their ability to access economies of scale and compete with large incumbents to the digital tools that connect them with customers around the world.

Check out the full study to see just how far e-commerce and omnichannel tools have carried retail SMBs:

Today U.S. President Biden and European Commission President von der Leyen announced “an agreement in principle on a new framework for transatlantic data flows.” CCIA applauds this important announcement. This is good news for all European and international companies relying on transatlantic data transfers for their daily business operations. We trust that a new framework will restore legal certainty for businesses and stronger safeguards for users.

While we welcome more certainty for EU-US commercial data flows, we are increasingly concerned with new European restrictions covering “non-personal” data. As our economies go online we need fewer, not more data restrictions, to trade with each other.

“Our cooperation on the sanctions against Russia has been exceptional. It shows that when we act together, we are stronger and can make a difference. We are now reinforcing our cooperation in: • Humanitarian aid to 🇺🇦 • Energy • Protecting our democracies”

The European Parliament today voted to adopt its position on the Digital Services Act (DSA). CCIA thanks MEPs for all their hard work and congratulate them on reaching this delicate compromise.
The DSA is an opportunity to create a flexible and future-proof regulatory framework for digital services in Europe.
During the final negotiations, we hope lawmakers will thoroughly assess the impact on European consumers and businesses of recent amendments. We urge negotiators to consider the impact of proposed new obligations such as restrictions to personalised ads, broad “know-your-business-consumer” obligations, user redress, and data disclosure to law enforcement and researchers.
