Paola Podestá: Tour with the Artist
The Skin of Discomfort
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am, Saturdays at 11am
Now through July 16.

This exhibition of textile patchworks by Paola Podestá of Valparaíso, Chile, uses its primary medium for reasons both aesthetic and metaphorical. She addresses issues related to the rights of women, fracking, the depletion of natural resources, immigration, and mental health, using patchwork to reinforce the idea that—much like the fabric scraps in a quilt—our challenges are interconnected and benefit from collective approaches to building a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.

Cynthia Villet-Gardner was born in Beaufort West, Cape, in what was then the Union of South Africa. She studied mainly at the Sir John Cass School of Art in London, and at the Vancouver School of Fine Art, under the painter Jack Shadbolt. She lived and worked in Barbados, South Africa, Canada, England, and Israel. She was largely inspired by 1950s Abstract Expressionism, studying ideas of spirituality and the sublime.
