What do you get when you mix flour, frosting, and a whole lot of determination?

Thanks to our friends at Baked by Yael, CLB youth and families spent the day inside a real commercial bakery kitchen, making cake pops from scratch - shaping each one by hand, then frosting and decorating their own creations to take home.

This outing was one highlight of Summer Days, CLB's new youth programming that debuted this season.

"I am so grateful that Yael and her team hosted our youth and families for such a fun and useful activity," shared Jocelyn Hunter, CLB's Director of Community Advocacy and Engagement. "It's community partners like Baked by Yael that further enrich our programming."

In 1900, two blind men arrived in Washington, DC, with a belief that was both simple and revolutionary: blindness should never stand between a person and an independent, fulfilling life. Today, that belief still guides us in everything that we do.

This October, Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind will host a celebration of 125 years of service in the DC, MD, and VA region – 125 years of mobility and assistive technology training, career services, and community. While the tools have changed over the years, the mission hasn’t.

In honor of this monumental anniversary, we have set an ambitious goal of raising $125,000 – which is $1,000 for every year of service. Every dollar received funds the programs, technology, and training that help people with vision loss live independently right here in the DMV.

A gift of any size moves the mission forward, and with your support, we can ensure the community we have built continues to grow.

We had a great start to our Youth Summer Days programming with Tech Saturday at our Silver Spring service center's Assistive Technology (AT) lab.
We met new families, toured the AT Lab, heard from CLB’s partner, , and enjoyed an amazing afternoon together.

Even the smallest hours can change someone's life. Joan began volunteering with CLB while working full-time. She sorts mail, helps with errands, and small tasks — but what she's really given is something much bigger: a sense of control and connection to someone who needs it most.
Her advice to anyone on the fence? "In the very small hours, even if you work full-time, you can make a big difference in the life of someone who really needs your help." If you've got a few hours to spare, someone in your community could use them.
