The evening benefited the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation’s Center for Uniting Families of Ukraine — the most urgent humanitarian and advocacy initiative in the Foundation’s 35-year history. The Center works to support the reunification of families separated by Russia’s war, advance best practices in trauma treatment (especially for children), and advocate for justice through continued sanctions and the establishment of a Special Tribunal.

Easter and Passover in Ukraine — Celebrating Through 1,500 Days of War

In Ukraine, this Easter and Passover arrive not in peace, but in a time that continues to test faith, endurance, and the meaning of freedom.

Easter bread and painted eggs (Pysanky) appear beside military gear. Services are held outdoors or in damaged churches. Children gather for small celebrations wherever safety allows. At Passover tables—whether at home, in shelters, or abroad—families retell the story of freedom while living through its cost.

As Ukraine endures more than 1,500 days of war, we witness both profound loss and extraordinary resilience. Even now, soldiers mark Easter on the front lines, and children find moments of celebration amid uncertainty.

Their strength reminds us that hope endures. May the blessings of Passover and Easter be with you and the People of Ukraine.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Nadia Komarnyckyj McConnell, co-founder and longtime leader of the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation.

For many decades, Nadia and her husband, Robert McConnell, have worked to strengthen the partnership between the United States and Ukraine and to support Ukrainians during times of challenge and change.

This year, in honor of Nadia’s birthday, we invite you to support two initiatives at the heart of our work today:
The Center for Reuniting the Families of Ukraine and the International Forget-Me-Not Advocacy Campaign, focused on returning abducted Ukrainian children and advocating for justice.

On Wednesday evening, the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation had the honor of hosting a special gathering at the House of Sweden in Washington, D.C.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Embassy of Sweden in USA and, personally, to Ulrika Frank, for their exceptional hospitality and assistance, which helped make the evening truly unforgettable.

We are also grateful to the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA / Посольство України в США for its continued partnership and support.

We were deeply honored by the presence and welcoming remarks of Ambassador of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna, as well as greetings from Jonas Wendel, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Sweden, and Ruth Bajada, Deputy Chief of Mission of the European Union.

The evening was dedicated to recognizing outstanding leadership and commitment to Ukraine. The Star of Ukraine Awards were presented to Senator Chuck Grassley, Congressman Steny Hoyer, and Howard G. Buffett for their unwavering support for the people of Ukraine during these challenging times.

A special thank you to the Howard G. Buffett Foundation for supporting this event and for the remarkable gift shared with our guests — Mr. Howard G. Buffett’s powerful photography book on Ukraine, capturing both the reality of the war and the resilience of the Ukrainian people.

We were also honored by the participation of distinguished guests and friends of Ukraine, including Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and Ambassador Temuri Yakobashvili.

A particularly moving moment of the evening was the performance by Ukrainian young talent Artem Fesko, winner of Ukraine’s Got Talent and Lithuania’s Got Talent, who spoke and performed on behalf of those whose voices have been silenced by war. We were also honored to feature the Cultural Forces of Ukraine, whose powerful performance was shared with our guests virtually.

The program also highlighted the Foundation’s international advocacy campaign Forget-Me-Not and the Center for Reuniting the Families of Ukraine, dedicated to helping reunite Ukrainian families separated by Russia’s war and advocating for accountability for crimes committed against Ukrainian children.

The evening also included remarks and insights from distinguished leaders and friends of Ukraine, including General Philip Breedlove and Ambassador John Herbst, reflecting on the importance of continued international support and solidarity.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us, supported this event, and continues to stand with the people of Ukraine.

Breaking news - Our Star of Ukraine awardee and honored guest Mr. Howard G. Buffett has gifted one signed copy of his new book COURAGE OF A NATION to our auction! https://bit.ly/usuf0318

It is an extraordinary collection of photos taken by Mr. Buffett himself who is a talented photographer. He is also a farmer, businessman, sworn law enforcement officer, former elected official and Chairman and CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in the United States. The images in his book, which has also been turned into a travelling exhibition, were taken between April 2022 and January 2025, including more than 63 days along the front lines showing the courage, resiliency, and commitment of the Ukrainian people as they stand strong for democracy and freedom.

Mr. Buffett crossed the border into Ukraine, camera in hand, about six weeks after Russia began its February 2022 full-scale invasion. Since then, Mr. Buffett has made more than 20 trips to Ukraine, including trips to Bucha, Kharkiv, Sumy, Kherson, Vuhledar, Slovyansk, and Bakhmut.
