To make fossil fuel exploration safer and more efficient, NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation is collaborating with U.S. small businesses to develop advanced technologies that replace traditional radiological tools. DNN-funded research has helped private partners create new tools that use safe electronic sensors and machine learning to find oil and gas without radioactive hazards.

DNN is helping American energy companies cut regulatory red tape, reduce liabilities, and drill safe.

NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams was aboard the historic N.S. Savannah, the world’s first nuclear-powered merchant ship, following the launch of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) initiative with Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

The N.S. Savannah shows what’s possible when we partner on nuclear innovation. Through ATLAS, we are building on that legacy to ensure civil nuclear energy at sea is safe, secure, and commercially viable.

A milestone moment for the sea-based leg of the nation’s nuclear triad: NNSA along with its labs, plants, and sites partnered with the U.S. Navy to complete the first production unit of the W76 Mark 4B reentry body, nearly 3 months ahead of schedule.

Shout out to Sandia National Labs for leading the system integration and design for the non-nuclear components. NNSA is accelerating production and delivering on our commitment to strengthen the reliability of America’s nuclear deterrent.
