Just over two weeks out from the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Women’s Foreign Policy Group, in partnership with the Embassy of Germany and the Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia, was delighted to co-host a panel discussion examining the diplomatic power and cross-sector impacts of global sporting events.

After insightful opening remarks from Deputy Chief of Mission Martin Thümmel, we were honored to hear from the highly decorated Steffi Jones, former German football player, team manager, and World Cup Champion; and sports diplomacy expert Travis Murphy, CEO, Jetr Global Sports + Entertainment. Expertly moderated by renowned sports journalist and author Christine Brennan, the conversation explored both the challenges and opportunities surrounding the World Cup and other international sporting events, as well as the intersection between sport, society, and diplomacy.
